Hauora Māori – Māori health: A right to equal outcomes in primary care
Māori practices are an expression of autonomy in the face of enduring health system failure. Apart from lower immunisation rates, health outcomes were not different from other models of care, despite patients having higher health risk profiles. Across all models, primary care need was unmet for many Māori, despite increased clinical input. Funding must support under-resourced Māori practices and ensure accountability for the health outcomes of Mā…
Nurses’ work in relation to patient health outcomes: An observational study comparing models of primary care
Transferring work to nurses in Traditional, Health Care Home, and Corporate practices, would release general practitioner clinical time for other work. More practitioner clinical time is required, especially in practices with high volumes of complex patients
Is there equity of patient health outcomes across models of general practice in Aotearoa New Zealand? A national cross-sectional study
Model-level associations with poor patient outcomes suggest inequity in measures that might be used to target investment in primary care
To Have or to Take: Discourse, Positioning, and Narrative Identity in Women's Accounts of HRT
Using 'social cognitive' frameworks, attitudes to HRT have been examined as if they were stable entities located within individuals. However, qualitative studies have revealed variations and contradictions in women's 'attitudes'. We seek to explain these apparent contradictions by using a social constructionist approach to the analysis of qualitative data from 7 focus group discussions about HRT with 48 women in New Zealand. A discourse analysis …
What is this Thing Called Hormone Replacement Therapy? Discursive Construction of Medication in Situated Practice
The use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) involves complex decisions for mid-aged women owing to controversy about the meaning of menopause and uncertainty regarding risks and benefits. Qualitative studies show that women can hold apparently contradictory beliefs, for example, both resisting and relying on medicalization. Focus group data (48 participants) and discourse analysis theorizing were used to investigate the complex discursive field …
Girl-trafficking, HIV/Aids, and the position of women in Nepal
This article focuses on trafficking of young Nepalese girls and women. Trafficking is an integral part of the social and economic fabric of Nepal, as in other parts of the world. The practice causes intolerable degradation and suffering for the girls and young women involved, who are treated as a commodity. It presents a risk to their physical and mental health, and in particular to their sexual health. The article examines the connections betwee…
