Visualizing Parcel-Level Lead Risk Using an Exterior Housing-Based Index
Pediatric lead poisoning remains a persistent public health problem. Children in the US spend the preponderance of their time at home; thus, housing is an important social determinant of health. Improving health outcomes derived from housing-based sources involves differentiating the risks posed by the existing housing stock. In this paper, we developed a parcel-level lead risk index (LRI) based on external housing conditions and the year of home…
Disinterest and Disruption: The Picture of Dorian Gray and the Modernist Aesthetics of the Obscene
‘Between Law and Transgression: Literature as a (Non-) Civilizing Strategy in the Early 20th Century’
Juxtaposing several strands of European modernism, this article shows how psychoanalysis lays the ground for a transgressive model of literature, which problematizes the widespread early 20 th -century conception of literature as either a civilizing force (articulated in the writings of I.A. Richards and F.R. Leavis) or a tool for freedom of expression (advocated by, amongst others, Ezra Pound). Following a brief analysis of Freud’s ideas on tran…
Heterology as Aesthetics: Bataille, Sovereign Art and the Affirmation of Impossibility
Like all discourses on the 'other', Bataille's heterology is faced with the problem of conceptualizing the heterogeneous (the other of thought, reason and language), while preserving its alterity, its fundamental resistance to conceptual thought. This paper interrogates the potential parallels between this aspect of Bataille's notion and some of the prevalent concerns of contemporary and traditional aesthetics. The argument is based on the idea t…

Critical issues for practice in residential treatment: The view from within
A large proportion of children in residential treatment engage in extreme acting-out behavior and suffer from severe attachment disorders and abuse reactivity. At the same time, practice is increasingly alienated from theory and public policy. The challenges to practitioners posed by these difficulties are described and illustrated by vignettes, their impact on residential group care practice is discussed, and their implications for the redesign …
The Many Faces of Correlates of Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents
In a sample of White working-class adolescents, 21% scored above 12 on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), with almost twice as many girls as boys in the high-CDI group. Maternal and adolescent reports indicated deficits in most areas of adolescent functioning in the high-CDI group. Within the high-CDI group, no differences in social class and family structure were found. No gender differences emerged for most correlates of depressive symp…
