  • A nuclear families word list for French

Open Access•Tia Cobb, Thomas Cobb et al.•ARTICLE•Modern Language Journal•2026

This between‐languages replication study relates the development and testing of a nuclear, families‐based, pedagogical word list for French as was previously done for English. A word family includes base and inflected words (or lemmas) plus derivations. A nuclear family is reduced to the most frequent of these, with less frequent members set aside according to a frequency criterion. Such a list is needed in French because existing French word lis…

  • The interpretation of verbal moods in Spanish: A close replication of Kanwit and Geeslin (2014)

Open Access•Aarnes Gudmestad, Amanda Edmonds et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Second Language…•2024

This study is a close replication of Kanwit and Geeslin (2014), a variationist investigation of the interpretation of verbal moods in adverbial clauses in Spanish. Whereas the first language (L1) of the second-language participants in the initial study was English, we explore whether Kanwit and Geeslin’s results extend to other L1 populations—Swedish and French learners of Spanish. Participants in the replication study completed the same interpre…

  • Vocabulary Knowledge in L3 French: A Study of Swedish Learners' Vocabulary Depth

    Open Access•Cecilia Lindqvist•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•References: 25

The overall aim of the present study is to achieve a better understanding of young instructed Swedish learners' vocabulary knowledge in L3 French, by examining various aspects of vocabulary depth. Previous research has shown that this learner group's vocabulary size increases systematically, and at a relatively fast pace, from grade 6 through grade 9 (i.e., from the first year of studies of French and onwards; from age 12 to 15). However, vocabul…

  • L1 and L2 role assignment in L3 learning. Is there a pattern

    Open Access•Ylva Falk, Cecilia Lindqvist•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

This study investigates lexical transfer in four German learners’ oral production of L3 Swedish. They have already learned English as an L2. The point of departure is Williams and Hammarberg’s [1998. Language switches in L3 production: implications for a polyglot speaking model. Applied Linguistics, 19, 295–333] case study in which Swedish was also the L3, but the learner had English as an L1 and German as an L2. Williams and Hammarberg convincin…

  • The use of the L1 and the L2 in French L3: Examining cross-linguistic lexemes in multilingual learners’ oral production

    Cecilia Lindqvist•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This study investigates to what degree, and in what manner, the L1 and L2(s) influence spoken French L3. The analysis is divided in two parts. The first examines the cross-linguistic lexemes of 30 Swedish learners, divided into three groups according to previous exposure to French. The results show that proficiency in the L3 is crucial: the least advanced learners produce the highest number of cross-linguistic lexemes, whereas the most advanced l…

  • Who Should Receive Subsidized Psychotherapy: Analysis of Decision Makers' Think-Aloud Protocols

Open Access•Gunilla Fredelius, Rolf Sandell et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2002•References: 13

Three groups of judges representing clinical, political, and laypersons' perspectives were given the task of prioritizing patients for subsidized psychotherapy within the Swedish health care system. The authors documented the judges'decision-making processes in think-aloud protocols and analyzed them qualitatively, focusing on the conflict between the urgency of a case and its suitability for treatment. In an earlier statistical analysis of the s…
