  • Gestational Exposure to Phthalates and Social Responsiveness Scores in Children Using Quantile Regression

    Open Access•Marisa A Patti, Craig J Newschaffer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Linear regression is often used to estimate associations between chemical exposures and neurodevelopment at the mean of the outcome. However, the potential effect of chemicals may be greater among individuals at the 'tails' of outcome distributions. Here, we investigated distributional effects on the associations between gestational phthalate exposure and child Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)-related behaviors using quantile regression. We harmoni…

  • Urbanization in China and the Coordinated Development Model—The case of Chengdu

Open Access•Aimin Chen, Jie Gao•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2011•Cited by: 11

China's urbanization faces two greatest difficulties of creating non-farm jobs to “landless farmers” and providing required amenities and social services to urbanites-to-be. In the earlier phase of development, TVE employment had provided important relief to the job pressure. Later, the “Small-city Strategy” that emphasized forming towns and small cities around where rural population resided successfully deterred rural population's entry into lar…

  • Urbanization in China and the Case of Fujian Province

    Open Access•Aimin Chen•ARTICLE•Modern China•2006•Cited by: 6•References: 8

This article examines China’s urbanization, drawing on the case of Fujian province. It finds that the lower rate of urbanization than of nonfarm employment and industrialization is partly explained by flaws in the current method of calculating the extent of urbanization. It demonstrates that the characteristics of Chinese urbanization differ in cities and towns of varying administrative ranks, and shows that the desirability of controlling popula…

  • Determinants of Urban Migration

    Open Access•Aimin Chen, N Edward Coulson•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 11

This study seeks the causes of variation in the amount of migration to Chinese cities over the period of 1995-99. We use a city fixed-effect model with lagged values of 'pull' factors for each city. While wage income shows no significant influence on migration, per capita gross city income does, suggesting that migrants seek returns above and beyond mere wages. Our regression results show that cities with high ratios of the manufacturing and serv…

    Open Access•Aimin Chen, Richard Lotspeich•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•1998

  • China's urban housing market development

    Aimin Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•1998•Cited by: 13

This study analyzes the predicaments and prospects of China's urban housing market development. To this end, it examines the pre‐reform housing system in China's urban sector, presents major reform efforts, and investigates most recent reform designs and price subsidy schemes. The author maintains that China's housing market can be expected to develop vigorously as both fundamental factors and policy directives favor such a development

  • Environmental protection in the people's republic of China

Richard Lotspeich, Aimin Chen•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Environmental degradation in China has become a serious problem of substantial magnitude, and, despite notable efforts at pollution control, as Chinese industrialization and economic growth continue there will be increasing pressures on the environment. This paper provides perspective on environmental pollution in China and an analysis of the policy response. Recent environmental data are summarized followed by consideration of the centrally plan…

  • China's Urban Housing Reform

    Open Access•Aimin Chen•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1996•Cited by: 24•References: 7

China's urban housing marketisation hinges on a sensible ratio of housing price to rent. This research derives a rational level for such a ratio and examines its distortions under the Chinese system. It shows that the prevailing housing price to rent ratios are significantly higher than the rational level for both subsidised and free-market housing. Unique Chinese housing market equilibria are analysed and policy recommendations on commercialisin…
