    Christie Welch, Debra Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 5

This study was conducted within a series aimed at building understanding of autism using insider perspectives. We applied a descriptive qualitative approach, highlighting meanings that the informants attach to events in their lives. The data were generated by scraping blogs written by autistic authors. We conducted an inductive thematic analysis using an iterative process of coding, collating and reviewing themes. We present the themes using two …

  • Staging Breast Cancer, Rehearsing Metastatic Disease

Christina Sinding, José Orenga et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Social science researchers have fruitfully used a range of conceptualizations of "performance": as a metaphor for social life, a way of vivifying research findings, and a form of scholarly representation. In this article, the researchers consider performance in its hermeneutic sense, as a way of generating meaning. The drama Handle With Care? Living With Metastatic Breast Cancer was created by a research team, a theater troupe, and women with bre…

  • The use of research‐based theatre in a project related to metastatic breast cancer

    Open Access•Ross E Gray, Ross Gray et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2000

Research‐based theatre represents an innovative approach to disseminating the results of qualitative studies. In this paper, we provide a rationale for the importance of research‐based theatre and also review previous work that has been done in the area. We then describe our experience in transforming research data into a dramatic production, Handle with Care ? This production was based on two studies – one with women with metastatic breast cance…

This qualitative study explored issues of support and coping for couples where the man had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Thirty-four men with prostate cancer and their spouses were interviewed separately at three points in time: prior to surgery; 8 to 10 weeks post-surgery; and 11 to 13 months post-surgery. The core category for the couples' experience with diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer was Managing the Impact of Illness. Fiv…

  • Individual Correlates of Health Service Utilization and the Cost of Poor Adjustment to Chronic Illness

Gina Browne, Gina B Browne et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1990

It was conjectured that a small group of chronically ill in tertiary ambulatory clinics consume a large amount of health resources and that, from the perspective of the patient, psychosocial rather than disease variables would most explain their health service utilization and subsequent cost. New referrals with a chronic illness (N = 215) to one of three clinics (oncology, rheumatology, and gastroenterology) consented to participate in a subseque…
