Going green for Eco or Ego? A meta-analysis of the comparative effects of environmental appeals and personal appeals on pro-environmental outcomes
Not Relying on Emotions
Organizations are increasingly using algorithms in various fields. Existing research has investigated how people perceive algorithms and tasks performed by algorithms while leaving how people perceive organizations using algorithms understudied. This research reveals the “organizations using algorithms = less warm” effect, demonstrating that organizations employing algorithms are considered less warm than those employing human experts. This perce…
Asian Evasion
Converging evidence points toward the COVID-19 pandemic having amplified lingering anti-Asian prejudice and discrimination, including the virus’s geographical origin being highlighted on social media. This amplification is consistent with theoretical frameworks and empirical findings that connect moral disapproval to biological aversion. Furthermore, experimental literature suggests that prejudicial stereotypes (e.g., of Black criminality) can pr…
Age differences in psychological ownership and their impact on consumer behavior
This article investigates a specific situation in which individuals retain psychological ownership of certain possessions even when they no longer physically own them. This lingering psychological ownership is influenced by age and subsequently affects the repurchase behavior of individuals across different age groups toward the same brand. The illusion of control serves as the underlying mechanism for this effect. We investigate age differences …
The Color of Status
The elevation of brand status is a crucial goal for numerous luxury brands. Building on the framework of learned color associations, the current research suggests that using less saturated colors in products enhances consumers’ perception of luxury brand status. This effect arises from consumers’ association between less saturated colors and the passage of time, leading to perceptions of the brand as having a rich continuity heritage. Because con…
A Platform Ecosystem Evolution Model With Service Dynamic Supply and Matching
Governance strategies related to platform ecosystems have become a vital issue for developing a smart society, attracting governments’ and practitioners’ attention. Under the consensus of “service as a commodity” and “platform as market,” service providers, platforms, services, and various supply demand matching methods form new supply processes. These elements are continuously and uncertainly changing during supply demand matching, which makes p…

Impact of repeated two-syllable brand names on consumer ethical responses in different moral contexts

Discrete emotions discovered by contactless measurement of facial blood flows
Experiential and behavioural aspects of emotions can be measured readily but developing a contactless measure of emotions' physiological aspects has been a major challenge. We hypothesised that different emotion-evoking films can produce distinctive facial blood flow patterns that can serve as physiological signatures of discrete emotions. To test this hypothesis, we created a new Transdermal Optical Imaging system that uses a conventional video …
The Restorative Power of Nostalgia
Lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic increased the risk for loneliness. We tested whether nostalgia counteracts loneliness via rises in happiness. We conducted surveys in China ( N = 1,546), the United States ( N = 1,572), and the United Kingdom ( N = 603). Although feeling lonely was associated with unhappiness, it was also associated with nostalgia, which in turn conduced to increased happiness. We complemented these findings with three exper…

Increasing hand-hygiene compliance in clinical settings using a baby-eyes sticker
This double-blind field study tested the effectiveness of a baby-eyes image in promoting healthcare workers’ hand-hygiene compliance in a hospital setting. Adults are inclined to take care of babies and aspire to be their role models; therefore, they should wash their hands thoroughly when being watched by babies. Participants were healthcare workers from the obstetrical and neonatology units of a women’s hospital in Hangzhou. We recorded and cod…
The influence of weather and air pollution on honest behavior
Honest behavior is a fundamental aspect of economic and social life. Although many countries have been committed to promoting civil honesty, there are still many dishonest behaviors that act as barriers to the development of society, such as broken promises, unenforced contracts and corrupt governments. In recent years, much research has been performed on the factors influencing people’s honest behaviors, such as social norms and emotions; howeve…
Having a secret reduces charitable giving
Secrecy involves the active concealment of information from others, which can cause undesirable consequences for cognitive, perceptual and health psychology, but empirical research linking secrecy to charitable behaviors remains relatively scarce. This research examined whether secrecy weakens people’s desire to engage in charitable behaviors. Two experiments demonstrated that as a mental burden, secrets decreased people’s donation desire, includ…
Nostalgia promotes help seeking by fostering social connectedness
Individuals are often reluctant to seek help from others. Nostalgia is a highly social emotion that bolsters perceptions of connectedness with others. In 6 studies, we investigated whether nostalgia reduces individuals' general reluctance to reach out to others for help by virtue of its capacity to strengthen social connectedness (i.e., a sense of acceptance and support). In a preliminary study, we measured nostalgia, 6 comparator emotions, and h…

Money Helps When Money Feels
Across five studies, the current research demonstrates that imbuing money with humanlike characteristics can enhance charitable giving. Based on mind perception theory, we propose that anthropomorphizing money can induce people to attribute to money the capacity to feel and sense (i.e., warmth) and the capacity to do things (i.e., competence). Further, we argue that enhanced warmth perception increases charitable giving. Studies 1a and 1b provide…
Chinese isms dimensions in mainland China and Taiwan
OBJECTIVE: Previous studies of American English isms terms have uncovered as many as five broad factors: tradition-oriented religiousness (TR), subjective spirituality (SS), communal rationalism (CR), unmitigated self-interest (USI), and inequality aversion (IA). The present studies took a similar lexical approach to investigate the Chinese-language isms structures in both mainland China and Taiwan. METHOD AND RESULTS: In Study 1, exploratory fac…
Awe Weakens the Desire for Money
This research examined whether feeling awe weakens people's desire for money. Two experiments demonstrated that, as a self-transcendent emotion, awe decreased people's money desire. In Experiment 1, recalling a personal experience of awe makes people place less importance on money, compared with recalling an experience of happiness and recalling a neutral experience. In experiment 2, we examined different variants of awe, such as negative awe and…

Nostalgia
Nostalgia, a sentimental longing for a personally experienced and valued past, is a social emotion. It refers to significant others in the context of momentous life events and fosters a sense of social connectedness. On this basis, the authors hypothesized that (1) nostalgia promotes charitable intentions and behavior, and (2) this effect is mediated by empathy with the charity's beneficiaries. Five studies assessed the effect of nostalgia on emp…
Control deprivation and styles of thinking
Westerners habitually think in analytical ways, whereas East Asians tend to favor holistic styles of thinking. We replicated this difference but showed that it disappeared after control deprivation (Experiment 1). Brief experiences of control deprivation, which stimulate increased desire for control, caused Chinese participants to shift toward Western-style analytical thinking in multiple ways (Experiments 2-5). Western Caucasian participants als…

Diverging effects of clean versus dirty money on attitudes, values, and interpersonal behavior
Does the cue of money lead to selfish, greedy, exploitative behaviors or to fairness, exchange, and reciprocity? We found evidence for both, suggesting that people have both sets of meaningful associations, which can be differentially activated by exposure to clean versus dirty money. In a field experiment at a farmers' market, vendors who handled dirty money subsequently cheated customers, whereas those who handled clean money gave fair value (E…

Factorial Invariance of the Questionnaire About Interpersonal Difficulties for Adolescents Across Spanish and Chinese Adolescent Samples
The factor structure of the Questionnaire about Interpersonal Difficulties for Adolescents was examined across gender and ethnicity in samples of Spanish and Chinese adolescents using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses. Partial invariance was observed across gender in the Spanish sample and across ethnic groups. Measurement invariance was found across gender in the Chinese sample
Reliability and Validity of the Chinese Version of the Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents
Counteracting Loneliness
Four studies tested whether nostalgia can counteract reductions in perceived social support caused by loneliness. Loneliness reduced perceptions of social support but increased nostalgia. Nostalgia, in turn, increased perceptions of social support. Thus, loneliness affected perceived social support in two distinct ways. Whereas the direct effect of loneliness was to reduce perceived social support, the indirect effect of loneliness was to increas…

The Symbolic Power of Money
People often get what they want from the social system, and that process is aided by social popularity or by having money. Money can thus possibly substitute for social acceptance in conferring the ability to obtain benefits from the social system. Moreover, past work has suggested that responses to physical pain and social distress share common underlying mechanisms. Six studies tested relationships among reminders of money, social exclusion, an…
The Factor Structure of Chinese Personality Terms
From the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary, 3,159 personality descriptors were selected and then ranked by the frequency of use. Among those, the top 413 terms with the highest frequency were administered to two independent large samples in China for self‐ratings and peer ratings to explore the emic Chinese personality structure as well as to test the universality of other models. One‐ and two‐factor structures found in previous studies of other la…
Heartwarming memories
Nostalgia, a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, is a predominantly positive and social emotion. Recent evidence suggests that nostalgia maintains psychological comfort. Here, we propose, and document in five methodologically diverse studies, a broader homeostatic function for nostalgia that also encompasses the maintenance of physiological comfort. We show that nostalgia--an emotion with a strong connotation of warmth--is trig…

A Basic Bivariate Structure of Personality Attributes Evident Across Nine Languages
Here, two studies seek to characterize a parsimonious common‐denominator personality structure with optimal cross‐cultural replicability. Personality differences are observed in all human populations and cultures, but lexicons for personality attributes contain so many distinctions that parsimony is lacking. Models stipulating the most important attributes have been formulated by experts or by empirical studies drawing on experience in a very lim…
Pancultural nostalgia
Nostalgia is a frequently experienced complex emotion, understood by laypersons in the United Kingdom and United States of America to (a) refer prototypically to fond, self-relevant, social memories and (b) be more pleasant (e.g., happy, warm) than unpleasant (e.g., sad, regretful). This research examined whether people across cultures conceive of nostalgia in the same way. Students in 18 countries across 5 continents (N = 1,704) rated the protot…
The mnemonic mover
In light of its role in maintaining psychological equanimity, we proposed that nostalgia--a self-relevant, social, and predominantly positive emotion--regulates avoidance and approach motivation. We advanced a model in which (a) avoidance motivation triggers nostalgia and (b) nostalgia, in turn, increases approach motivation. As a result, nostalgia counteracts the negative impact of avoidance motivation on approach motivation. Five methodological…

Nostalgia fosters self-continuity
Nostalgia, a sentimental longing for one's past, is an emotion that arises from self-relevant and social memories. Nostalgia functions, in part, to foster self-continuity, that is, a sense of connection between one's past and one's present. This article examined, in 6 experiments, how nostalgia fosters self-continuity and the implications of that process for well-being. Nostalgia fosters self-continuity by augmenting social connectedness, that is…
