  • Mapping Soil Heavy Metal Using an Interpretable Framework With Multi‐Sources Data

Open Access•Bifeng Hu, Yibo Geng et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Predicting the spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metals (HMs) and identifying the determinants and sources is fundamental to developing effective strategies to mitigate and prevent environmental contamination. This study established a comprehensive research framework of “spatial prediction ‐ driver factor analysis ‐ source contribution quantification”. By comparing and using different methods to draw the spatial distribution map of HMs and comb…

  • The impact of China’s low-carbon city pilot policy on public health expenditure

Open Access•Yanyin Cui, Jie Ren et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Objective: In driving a transition in environmental governance, China's low-carbon city pilot (LCCP) policy has exerted a dichotomous impact on public health expenditure that is characterized by both a decline in relative proportion and expansion of absolute scale. Research to date is insufficient for understanding the transmission mechanisms and policy coordination pathways underlying this contradiction, which has hindered the sustainable realiz…

  • Registered report “Categorical perception of facial expressions of anger and disgust across cultures”

    X Fang, Fang Xia et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2024

Previous research has demonstrated that individuals from Western cultures exhibit categorical perception (CP) in their judgments of emotional faces. However, the extent to which this phenomenon characterises the judgments of facial expressions among East Asians remains relatively unexplored. Building upon recent findings showing that East Asians are more likely than Westerners to see a mixture of emotions in facial expressions of anger and disgus…

  • The impact of spontaneity and presentation mode on the ingroup advantage in recognizing angry and disgusted facial expressions

Fang Xia, GE Youxun•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2024

Open Access•Jiangyue Wu, Guodong Xu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In China, studies on the regional risk assessment of hazardous chemicals have been carried out for only a few years, and there are few studies on hazardous chemicals leaking into seas. Previous regional-risk-assessment methods considered a single risk factor for most assessment targets, and comprehensive considerations of risk sources and sensitive resources for a study area are not sufficiently included. Based on previous work, this study establ…

The extensive pattern of economic growth has an inestimable negative impact on the ecological environment, which causes the soil pollution problem to become increasingly prominent. In order to improve the effectiveness and rationality of prevention and control of heavy metal pollution in regional soil, it is necessary to understand the current situation of pollution, identify pollution sources and clarify future pollution risks. In this paper, an…

  • Re-reading Immigrant Chinese Self-narratives in English (1980s to 1990s): A West–East Perspective of Philosophy and Literature

    Fang Xia•ARTICLE•Life Writing•2021•References: 6

This essay addresses the question of why the immigrant Chinese self-narratives published in English during the 1980s and 1990s set against China’s Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) have achieved extraordinary commercial success and unabated popularity in the West. Reading them against the conventions of the Western self and the Chinese self, this essay argues that manipulation of the self by the retrieval of favourable sources from both Western and…

  • Investment impacts of gendered land rights in customary tenure systems: Substantive and methodological insights from Malawi

    Open Access•Klaus Deininger, Fang Xia et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2021•Cited by: 7•References: 23

Although most of the world’s agricultural land is cultivated under customary tenure regimes that tend to change over time in response to exogenous factors, the impact of customary rights on productivity and investment remains under-researched. Using unique data from an experiment in Malawi, we show that (i) parcel-level bequest and sale rights affect investment and cash crop adoption; (ii) impacts are gender-differentiated -women’s rights affect …

Open Access•Shihua Zhu, Chi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Water use efficiency (WUE) characterizes the relationship between water dissipation and carbon sequestration. Knowledge of WUE dynamics and its responses to complex climate controls are prerequisites for addressing the challenges of future climate change and human disturbance of wild lands. Owing to a lack of experimental observations and the complexity of quantifying the individual and interactive effects of different environmental factors, the …

  • Gendered Incidence and Impacts of Tenure Insecurity on Agricultural Performance in Malawi’s Customary Tenure System

Klaus Deininger, Fang Xia et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

Malawi’s recent passage of Land Acts provide an opportunity to clarify different aspects of the country’s land tenure in an integrated way. To assess whether doing so might be economically justified, we explore incidence and impact of tenure insecurity among smallholders. Insecurity is not only widespread, with 22 per cent of land users being concerned about losing their land, but is also associated with a productivity loss of 9 per cent for fema…

  • Inheritance Law Reform, Empowerment, and Human Capital Accumulation: Second-Generation Effects from India

Klaus Deininger, Songqing Jin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

Although many studies point towards significant positive impacts of Hindu Succession Act (HSA) reforms on females’ empowerment and access to human and physical capital, the fact that this reform also led to increased female mortality raises questions about long-term sustainability of reform effects. We use evidence from three states, one of which amended the HSA in 1994, to assess first- and second-generation effects of this reform using a triple…
