Impact of Race, Ethnicity, and Insurance Type on In-hospital Mortality in Children with Traumatic Injury
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of insurance status and race/ethnicity with in-hospital mortality among pediatric trauma patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the National Trauma Data Bank (2007-2019, excluding 2018). Patients younger than 17 years with an Injury Severity Score > 9 were included. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the independent and combined associations of race/ethnicity and…
The formation and revision of intuitions
This paper presents 59 new studies (N = 72,310) which focus primarily on the "bat and ball problem." It documents our attempts to understand the determinants of the erroneous intuition, our exploration of ways to stimulate reflection, and our discovery that the erroneous intuition often survives whatever further reflection can be induced. Our investigation helps inform conceptions of dual process models, as "system 1" processes often appear to ov…
Qué Está Haciendo Papá? Mexican-Heritage Fathers' Physical Activity Networks After a Father-Focused Health Program
Physical activity (PA) is a public health priority due to holistic health benefits; however, many adults do not meet PA guidelines. Few studies have examined Mexican-heritage fathers' social networks, specifically with whom they are physically active. This study examines changes in Mexican-heritage fathers' PA networks after participation in a father-focused, family-centered health program. Families consisting of child (aged 9-11 years), mother, …

Exploring the Construction of a Category in Warring States Sources
This article examines the category of “Master” as it was used in texts produced during the Warring States. Though scholars have generally assumed that common conventions informed the role and figure of the Master across early texts, close analysis of the sources does not support this reading. The present essay focuses upon the figure of Mo Di as it is constructed in the anecdotes anthologized in the “Dialogues” of the Mozi , comparing the social,…

“Only the Human Way May Be Followed” Reading the Guodian Manuscripts Against the Mozi
Though the Guodian manuscripts have been viewed as an eclectic mix of texts, this article argues that, viewed in historical context, the collection has more coherence than has conventionally been supposed. Since the texts were interred in Chu c. 300 b.c.e. , they should be read against other expressions of that time and place. The Mozi , much of which was likely used or produced by authors active in Chu at the time of the Guodian internment, is p…
Inventing the General
The Sunzi bingfa, commonly known as Sun Tzu's Art of War, reads like a treasure trove of strategic wisdom. When it first appeared in the late fourth century BCE, however, the Sunzi drew intense censure for its radical departure from the strategic culture of the age and for the author’s call for a professional standard of command in war. The revolutionary nature of the text is often lost on contemporary readers who assume the existence of a profes…
