  • The Activating Welfare State and Precarisation: A Temporal Analysis of the Perceived Unemployment Risk in Switzerland, 1999-2019

Open Access•Saro Gibilisco, Monica Budowski et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 60

Existing research predominantly examines precarisation processes within the framework of the welfare state crisis. This study diverges from this conventional practice as it explores precarisation in terms of a product of welfare state intervention. Specifically, the main argument is that welfare state interventions towards individual responsibility and activation centre on precarisation as a governance principle. Through a temporal examination of…

  • The Inverted Pyramid and Beyond: Perceptions of Distributive Justice Among (Highly) Qualified Workers in Contemporary Cuba

    Open Access•N Jany, Monica Budowski•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2025•References: 14

In 2020/2021, wage scale reforms were implemented in Cuba to improve distributive justice. The previously long-prevailing wage system and resulting wage structure, often referred to as an inverted pyramid, is said to have especially affected (highly) qualified workers in Cuba. This research provides emergent and partly speculative data on perceptions of distributive justice that (highly) qualified workers in Havana held during the time of change.…

The study compares the way 42 middle-income households from Chile and Costa Rica deal with health problems by means of three semi-structured interviews from 2008 to 2013. It contributes to the subjective perspective of health experiences. Results show that in Chile’s segmented health-care model, economic resources and type of health problems impact on the ability to deal with health risks leading to feelings of insecurity and the risk of spillo…

  • Conceptualizing ‘precarious prosperity’: Empirical and theoretical elements for debate

    Open Access•Monica Budowski, Robin Tillmann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Cited by: 9•References: 29

Empirical studies have recently pointed towards a socio-structural category largely overlooked in social inequality research: the dynamic positions of households adjacent to those of the poor and yet not representing those of the established, more prosperous positions in society. These results suggest that the population in this category fluctuates into and out of poverty more often than moving into and out of secure prosperity. This category — s…

  • Fatherless Costa Rica: Child Acknowledgment and Support Among Lone Mothers

Monica Budowski, Luis Rosero Bixby•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•2003•Cited by: 8

Much debate is going on in Costa Rica about the increase of out-of-wedlock births and unestablished paternity in particular with regard to the elaboration of social policy measures. No systematic empirical data on the issue has been available to date, leaving the various discourses in public without foundation. Our work contributes to this gap in knowledge. Data and methodology: Using representative data sets we outline the national situation. A …
