Where Are the Humans in Urban Greening? Proposing a New Approach to Urban Greening Through the Lens of Human-Centered Design
Urban greening has transitioned from a supplementary component of urban development to a central element in contemporary planning policies, driven by its recognized environmental, social, and health benefits. This paper explores urban greening processes through the lens of Human-Centered Design (HCD), an approach that emphasizes iterative, participatory, and user-oriented approaches. While public participation in urban planning is traditionally f…
European Union leadership: A crisis in identity
In 2024, elections for the European Parliament were accompanied by the nomination of a new College of Commissioners, and the appointments of Presidents of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the European Council and a new High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The outcomes of these processes indicate a more complex political environment for the European Union but also pointed to increasing instability with d…
Internationalisation of Australian small and medium-sized enterprises: The case of the Australia and EU Free Trade Agreement
Australia is a member of many multilateral trade bodies and engages in trade agreements of a multilateral and bilateral kind across most regions. In June 2018, it launched negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) which are still ongoing and since then Australia and the EU have conducted fifteen rounds of negotiations (last one on 28 May 2023 in Brussels). This paper aims to explore the business awareness of the E…
New Directions in Regional Strategies: Socio-Ecological Innovation in Australia
It provides a brief review of the initial engagement with Smart Specialisation in the region of Gippsland, before providing a more detailed account of the application of smart specialisation to transition in small communities responding to an end to native forest logging. It concludes with an overview of the key elements that distinguish this work as ‘new directions in regional strategies’. While developing very much in an Australian context, it …
Where would we be without Cesaa
Most Australians have limited knowledge or appreciation of the European Union (EU), its structure and processes. The relationships between the 27 Member States and the EU institutions mean little, let alone the complex arrangements and checks and balances in place, on the one hand to promote European integration, and on the other, to protect and promote the rights and interests of the nations which form the membership of the EU
The evolving role of EU Regional Policy: Implications for Australia
In 2013, ANZJES published an article on the significance of European Union (EU) Regional Policy in the process of European integration and its implications for Asia. Over the past decade, EU Regional Policy has evolved considerably. It is still centred on facilitating European integration, but also assumes a much more central role in focusing attention on harnessing resources, intellectual and economic, in order to address major societal missions…
'Stretching the Imagination': Geographical Indications in the EU-Australia FTA Negotiations
The launch of negotiations for an EU-Australia 'free trade agreement' (FTA) on 18 June 2018 was a confirmation of a 'like-minded' strong partnership, in which both parties had high hopes for an ambitious agreement which would test the new wave of protectionism promoted by Donald Trump.Nonetheless, the initial rounds of negotiations revealed several issues which illustrate the scale of the challenge to be addressed. One such example was the issue …
Regional Policy in the EU Mode of Regionalism: Implications for Asian Integration
Regional Policy continues to be a central part of the overall framework of the European Union’s (EU) approach to developing a supranational political and economic entity. It accounts for more than one third of the EU’s expenditure and involves complex challenges of redistributing resources from subnational regions in some nations to poorer regions in other nation states. What can nations in other parts of the world that are engaged in pursuit of …
Narrative Alignment and Misalignment: Nato as a Global Actor as Seen from Australia and New Zealand
In the wake of the Afghan missions, this article assesses the appetite in Australia and New Zealand for an ongoing relationship with NATO. Australia and New Zealand share many commonalities in their cultural, political, and economic profiles. Yet their identities in the realm of defense and security differ subtly, which has important implications for the reception of NATO’s strategic narratives in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Drawing on strategi…

Students' Reactions to a "No Failure" Grading System and How They Informed Teacher Practice
This article briefly describes the central tenets of a program several low-income middle schools implemented to remove failure as a choice students could make in completing their assignments. Instead of doling out Fs for poor and nonexistent work, teachers devised a variety of options students had to follow to demonstrate eventual mastery of critical skills and knowledge. This article draws on nearly five years of interviews the authors did in th…

Make a Difference With, Not For, Students: A Plea to Researchers and Reformers
Student role redefinition is a critical, but overlooked, link between changes brought about by educational reforms and the realization of desired student results. Although the reform literature is well-stocked with ideas about what facilitates role change in adults, it is nearly silent with respect to students. This is surprising, given that most reforms maintain stringently that students' customary ways of acting will have to change for them to …
A comparison of classification systems for the conservation of sparsely wooded plains on Melville Island, Northern Australia
A floristic quadrat study of sparsely wooded plains on western Melville Island was conducted and used to define and describe floristic and structural vegetation types and identify their associated environmental correlates. The results were compared with an existing land-unit survey of the area in order to identify the relative merits of these schemes for conservation planning. All schemes identify a range of broad structural types including Acaci…

Livelihood and Social Division
The struggle for livelihood has always been of central concern to working class people. In Australia today the concentration of unemployment raises issues which must be seen as part of an historical process, involving the reconstruction of social division and the struggle for the right to subsistence. These issues are examined in this article, with particular attention to the social and economic changes which have produced this threat to liveliho…
The Effect of Classroom Structure on Shared Perceptions of Ability
The degree of ability differentiation—shared understandings of ability differences—which occurs in classrooms, can be theoretically attributed to the uniformity of criteria comparing students and to the number of dimensions on which those criteria are applied. We identify a cluster of classroom characteristics, labeled “classroom resolution,” hypothesized to produce variation in the degree of ability differentiation: grouping practice, teacher ev…

Thirty‐five percent of the addiction career non‐incarcerated time involved less‐than‐daily or no narcatic use.
