  • Metacommunicative- why fragments as probes into the grammar of the speech act layer

Open Access•Robert Woods, Luis Vicente et al.•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2021

The English lexical item why can be used metacommunicatively in response to a previous question act. In these cases, its meaning is similar to “Why are you (the original questioner) asking me (the original addressee) that question?” This is also true of why’s counterparts in a range of other languages. We demonstrate how metacommunicative, or meta, why’s use and meaning is similar to and different from the paraphrase above, proposing a modal-driv…

  • On a Nonargument for Cleft Sources in Sluicing

Luis Vicente, Luis Cuadrado De Vicente et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2021•References: 20

On the basis of certain semantic intuitions, Barros (2012) argues that ellipsis does not require structural isomorphism between elided structure and its antecedent. We tackle this claim. Semantic intuitions cannot be a pointer to the analysis of silent structure. We provide empirical evidence that raises the question of to what extent semantic intuitions about plausible articulable syntax must inform one’s analysis of silent structure. We conclud…

  • Definedness conditions on admission-of-ignorance moves

Open Access•Luis Vicente, Luis Cuadrado De Vicente•ARTICLE•Linguistics in the Netherlands•2016

Given a set of alternatives, a speaker can explicitly admit ignorance about which of them hold true. The (in)felicity of such admission-of-ignorance moves immediately following disjunctions and conjunctions follows from the semantics of or and and. However, semantics alone turns out to be insufficient in cases when the disjunction/conjunction and the admission-of-ignorance move are separated by additional conversational moves of acceptance, objec…

  • Where to nest? Ecological determinants of chimpanzee nest abundance and distribution at the habitat and tree species scale

    Open Access•Joana S Carvalho, Christoph F J Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2015

Conversion of forests to anthropogenic land-uses increasingly subjects chimpanzee populations to habitat changes and concomitant alterations in the plant resources available to them for nesting and feeding. Based on nest count surveys conducted during the dry season, we investigated nest tree species selection and the effect of vegetation attributes on nest abundance of the western chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes verus, at Lagoas de Cufada Natural Pa…

  • Verb doubling in Mandarin Chinese

Open Access•Lisa Lai-Shen Cheng, Luis Vicente et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2013

This article examines two so-far-understudied verb doubling constructions in Mandarin Chinese, viz ., verb doubling clefts and verb doubling lian...dou . We show that these constructions have the same internal syntax as regular clefts and lian...dou sentences, the doubling effect being epiphenomenal; therefore, we classify them as subtypes of the general cleft and lian...dou constructions, respectively, rather than as independent constructions. A…

The present study aims to contribute with a more valuable example of the zootherapy practices of a traditional community in the Brazilian Amazonia - the "Riozinho do Anfrísio" Extractive Reserve, in Northern Brazil.MethodsWe used the methods of pa…

Open Access•Flávio Bezerra Barros, Henrique M Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology and…•2011

In the Amazonian basin, the human populations that traditionally inhabit the forest use its natural resources in various ways. One example is the local fauna which, among several other uses, is an important source of protein. The general aim of our study was to investigate the importance of hunting to the lives of the Amazonian riverine communities and to identify the multiple uses and knowledge about the hunted animals. In this article we focuse…

Open Access•Joana Sousa, André V Barata et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2011

Cantanhez National Park in southern Guinea‐Bissau is a mosaic of forest, mangrove, savanna, and agricultural fields, with a high prevalence of oil‐palm trees ( Elaeis guineensis ). It hosts many different animal species, including the chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes verus ). Very little is known about the ecology of chimpanzees inhabiting this area. The main aims of this study were to evaluate chimpanzee nesting behavior, define trends of habitat us…

  • An Alternative to Remnant Movement for Partial Predicate Fronting

Open Access•Luis Vicente, Luis Cuadrado De Vicente•ARTICLE•Syntax•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 33

One of the main tenets of transformational grammar is that movement processes affect heads and phrases in different ways. In this article, I argue against this claim and propose that heads should be allowed to move in the same way as phrases. Conceptually, this proposal is the logical consequence of a common set of assumptions about syntax in general and movement in particular. Empirically, it finds support in the Spanish predicate cleft construc…
