Climate change, social environment, health, and urban inequality: Developing a novel adaptive evaluation framework
Country-level methane emissions and their sectoral trends during 2009–2020 estimated by high-resolution inversion of Gosat and surface observations
Considering the significant role of global methane emissions in the Earth’s radiative budget, global or regionally persistent increasing trends in its emission are of great concern. Understanding the regional contributions of various emissions sectors to the growth rate thus has policy relevance. We used a high-resolution global methane inverse model to independently optimize sectoral emissions using GOSAT and ground-based observations for 2009–2…
Global Carbon Budget 2023
Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere in a changing climate is critical to better understand the global carbon cycle, support the development of climate policies, and project future climate change. Here we describe and synthesize data sets and methodology to quantify the five major components of the global carbon budget and their uncertai…
Transboundary flows in the metacoupled Anthropocene: Typology, Methods, and Governance for Global Sustainability
The world has become increasingly metacoupled through flows of materials, energy, people, capital, and information within and across systems. Transboundary flows, connecting adjacent and distant systems, are deemed the most critical indicators for measuring the intensity of interactions among coupled human-natural systems. To advance metacoupling flow research and governance, we make the first attempt to develop a typology of transboundary flows …
Trend detection of atmospheric time series
This paper is aimed at atmospheric scientists without formal training in statistical theory. Its goal is to (1) provide a critical review of the rationale for trend analysis of the time series typically encountered in the field of atmospheric chemistry, (2) describe a range of trend-detection methods, and (3) demonstrate effective means of conveying the results to a general audience. Trend detections in atmospheric chemical composition data are o…
Sustained methane emissions from China after 2012 despite declining coal production and rice-cultivated area
China’s anthropogenic methane emissions are the largest of any country in the world. A recent study using atmospheric observations suggested that recent policies aimed at reducing emissions of methane due to coal production in China after 2010 had been largely ineffective. Here, based on a longer observational record and an updated modelling approach, we find a statistically significant positive linear trend (0.36 ± 0.04 ( ± 1 σ ) Tg CH 4 yr −2 )…
Interannual variability on methane emissions in monsoon Asia derived from Gosat and surface observations
In Asia, much effort is put into reducing methane (CH 4 ) emissions due to the region’s contribution to the recent rapid global atmospheric CH 4 concentration growth. Accurate quantification of Asia’s CH 4 budgets is critical for conducting global stocktake and achieving the long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement. In this study, we present top-down estimates of CH 4 emissions from 2009 to 2018 deduced from atmospheric observations from…
Urban-rural-specific trend in prevalence of general and central obesity, and association with hypertension in Chinese adults, aged 18–65 years
Both WC and BMI should be considered measures of obesity and targeted in hypertension prevention. More attention should be paid to the incidence of central obesity in adults in rural China
