  • Indigenous caretaking of beargrass and the social and ecological consequences of adaptations to maintain beargrass weaving practices

    Open Access•Georgia Hart-Fredeluces, Morey Burnham et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2022

Indigenous ecologies have persisted through major social and ecological changes including settler colonialism. Adaptations have been a necessary part of this resilience, however little attention has been given to the consequences of these adaptations for Indigenous Peoples and ecologies. Without exploring these consequences, we are left with an incomplete understanding of adaptation that potentially obscures social and ecological costs associated…

  • The Dark Ecology of Naked Lunch

    Open Access•George Hart•ARTICLE•Humanities•2020

In this article, I argue that William S. Burroughs’ novel Naked Lunch engages in a “perverse aesthetics” that is analogous to Timothy Morton’s theory of dark ecology. The novel’s main themes of consumption and control are directly related to the Anthropocene’s twin disasters of global warming and mass extinction, and the trope for addiction, junk, reveals Burroughs’ deep analysis of the political and social forces that attempt to control life, wh…

  • Vertex-Unfoldings of Simplicial Manifolds

Jeff Erickson, David Eppstein et al.•CHAPTER•Pure and applied mathematics•2003

We present an algorithm to unfold any triangulated 2-manifold (in particular, any simplicial polyhedron) into a non-overlapping, connected planar layout in linear time. The manifold is cut only along its edges. The resulting layout is connected, but it may have a disconnected interior; the triangles are connected at vertices, but not necessarily joined along edges. We extend our algorithm to establish a similar result for simplicial manifolds of arb…

  • Pharaohs and Pyramids

Karim Sadr, George Hart•ARTICLE•The South African Archaeological…•1991

Egyptian pyramids were considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and today, some 4500 years later, they still inspire awe and admiration. But the first time visitor to Egypt may be surprised at the number of pyramids at Meidum, Dahsur, Saggara, Abusir and Giza, which have earned the Old Kingdom the epithet, The Pyramid Age. Most of these monuments were constructed in the vicinity of the ancient capital city of Memphis, making nearl…

  • Residential energy monitoring and computerized surveillance via utility power flows

    Open Access•George Hart, G W Hart•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•1989

The author notes that all novel technologies have the potential to affect society in a complex manner, with both beneficial and detrimental consequences. He considers an illustrative case study: a nonintrusive appliance load monitoring technique that can provide vital information to help avoid future energy crises, but can also be used for surveillance purposes. He notes that there appears to be a significant potential for the technology to be ab…
