Open Access•Silva Larson, Diane Jarvis et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026•References: 49

The UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting-Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EA) provides a framework for integrating information about the environment and the economy, organising information about ecosystems, measuring ecosystem services, and tracking change. We explore how SEEA-EA can incorporate First Nations' conceptualisation of nature and cultural connections to traditional lands. We identify multiple entry avenues, propose key principles …

  • The Evolution and Devolution of the Offer to make Amends Regime in Australian Defamation Law

Michael Douglas, Catherine Graville et al.•ARTICLE•University of New South Wales Law…•2023

This article considers the development of the offer to make amends regime in Australian defamation law. It traces the evolution of the regime from the United Kingdom provisions that inspired piecemeal reform in Australia; to the 2005 model achieved by the so-called ‘Uniform Defamation Acts’; to the model created by 2021 amendments to the Model Defamation Provisions, now in force throughout much of Australia, which has altered the balance of the 2…

  • Internet-Enabled Behaviors in Older Adults During the Pandemic: Patterns of Use, Psychosocial Impacts, and Plans for Continued Utilization

    Open Access•Jared F Benge, Alyssa Aguirre et al.•ARTICLE•Work Aging and Retirement•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In response to social distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a need to increase the frequency of internet enabled behaviors (IEBs). To date, little is known about how the pandemic impacted IEBs in older adults, a population that has historically been linked to lower digital literacy and utilization. We administered an online survey between April and July 2021 to 298 adults who were over age 50 (mean age = 73 years; 93.5% non-…

  • Coproduction mechanisms to weave Indigenous knowledge, artificial intelligence, and technical data to enable Indigenous-led adaptive decision making: Lessons from Australia's joint managed Kakadu Nati…

Open Access•Catherine Robinson, Cathy Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2022•Cited by: 1

Most of the planet’s vital ecosystems are managed on lands owned by Indigenous peoples. Indigenous people face many challenges in managing these lands, including rapidly growing threats causing species extinctions and ecosystem losses. In response, many Indigenous groups are looking for ethical ways to use digital technology and data analytical tools to support their existing knowledge practices to solve complex environmental management problems.…

Open Access•Nina Wood, Grace Charlwood et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Unique experiences with employment and volunteering in a regional area amongst a refugee community were explored. Our results describe various ways in which meaningful employment and volunteering can facilitate positive health and wellbeing outcomes of refugees, and thus reinforces the importance of providing such opportunities to ensure successful settlement. The benefits of volunteering in this community have not been previously explored. Addit…

  • Characterisation of Breach of Confidence as a Privacy Tort in Private International Law

Michael Douglas•ARTICLE•University of New South Wales Law…•2018

Certain kinds of breach of confidence may be characterised as torts, at least for the purposes of Australian private international law, in respect of rules of jurisdiction and choice of law. When a breach of confidence involves a misuse of private information, a tortious characterisation is appropriate. This view is consistent with appellate authority recognising the unique character of equitable jurisdiction. The article begins by considering de…

  • Australia's Law Graduate Glut

Open Access•Michael Douglas, Nicholas van Hattem•ARTICLE•Alternative Law Journal•2016

Australia has too many law graduates and not enough jobs in law. Law graduates are finding employment outside of the profession, but we lack data on whether law graduates do not practise by choice, or by necessity. This article addresses this 'law graduate glut', its causes, and what should be done about it. The article identifies options for increasing the supply of positions for law graduates and reducing the supply of law graduates

  • Questioning the Right to Be Forgotten

    Open Access•Michael Douglas•ARTICLE•Alternative Law Journal•2015•Cited by: 1

The Internet has an almost unlimited capacity to remember, which has been described as the problem of ‘digital eternity’. Digital eternity presents a challenge for the protection of the right to privacy. This article questions Europe’s controversial response to that challenge in the so-called ‘right to be forgotten’. Since May 2014, search engine providers like Google have been required to remove thousands of links to personal data upon request. …

  • Social, political and spatial dimensions of Korean industrial transformation

Michael Douglas, Michael Douglass•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Asia•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Underlying the current process of industrial restructuring in Korea is the weakening of the social and political comerstones of Korea's “miracle” economy: low wages maintained through labor market segmentation and suppression of labor movements, state leverage over the chaebol and labor, the containment of the middle class through a state-of-war mentality, and the decentralization of industry away from the capital city through the creation of cou…
