Actor-network analysis of partners facilitating regenerative ranching practices in the US Northern Great Plains
Regenerative agriculture has been offered as an ecologically thoughtful means of food production, yet questions remain regarding how individuals in rural communities transition toward regenerative practices. • We studied dynamics related to the transition from traditional ranching to regenerative ranching by employing actor-network analysis on 24 semistructured interviews from ranchers in the Northern Great Plains region of the United States, who…
Compliments of Hamilton and Sargent: A Story of Mystery and Tragedy on the Gilded Age Frontier
Welcome home! Introducing SocSES: A Society for Inclusive and Impactful Social-Ecological Research
Underpinned by systemic thinking, social-ecological systems (SES) research has emerged as a critical field for addressing the challenges of the Anthropocene, marked by a cross-scale focus, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches, and a strong emphasis on place-based work. Thanks to the efforts of many networks and institutes, the field has advanced new theoretical and methodological approaches, fostered dedicated journals, and spurred educational…
The eyes have it! Functional field of view differences between visual search behavior and body-worn camera during a use of force response in active-duty police officers
Although officer body-worn cameras (BWCs) have improved transparency of police interactions within the community, BWCs have a limited field of view, are subject to bias, and do not account for the factors that influence rapid decision-making by officers, including their visual attentional control and perceptual processes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the camera perspective of six critical incidents and position data from BWC compar…
Understanding the values that inform regenerative ranching in the Northern U.S. Great Plains
The effects of environmental degradation and climate change are propelling a discourse shift towards regenerative agriculture, yet understanding motivations for implementing regenerative practices on private agricultural lands is still a challenge. We study that challenge within the realm of regenerative ranching, a subcategory of regenerative agriculture. By examining the frequency of values articulated by respondents, a valuation typology stemm…
Paving the Way for Reagan: The Influence of Conservative Media on U.S. Foreign Policy
From George H. Nash's twice-revised The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America since 1945 (1976), scholars first took the power of conservatism seriously. Acclaimed for demonstrating that seemingly boorish strands of conservative expression fused into a rock of postwar thought, Nash steered clear of politics. In Paving the Way for Reagan Laurence R. Jurdem maintains that politicians did, in fact, engage in serious conservative thinking tha…
Incorporating Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Worldviews Through Innovative Text Analysis: An Evaluation of Indigenous Public Health Curricula
In Australia, graduates of Master of Public Health (MPH) programs are expected to achieve a set of core competencies, designed to ensure they will be culturally safe practitioners when working with Indigenous communities. This study reviewed a sample of MPH programs to determine the level of integration that has been achieved since these core competencies were developed. In this article, we will focus on the innovative data analysis process used …
Measuring and assessing resilience: Broadening understanding through multiple disciplinary perspectives
Increased interest in managing resilience has led to efforts to develop standardized tools for assessments and quantitative measures. Resilience, however, as a property of complex adaptive systems, does not lend itself easily to measurement. Whereas assessment approaches tend to focus on deepening understanding of system dynamics, resilience measurement aims to capture and quantify resilience in a rigorous and repeatable way. We discuss the stren…

Ecosystems and Immune Systems: Hierarchical Response Provides Resilience against Invasions
Janssen (2001) provides the stimulus for thoughtful comparison and consideration of the ranges of responses exhibited by immune systems and ecological systems in the face of perturbations such as biological invasions. It may indeed be informative to consider the similarities of the responses to invasions exhibited by immune systems and ecological systems. Clearly, both types of systems share a general organizational structure with all other compl…
Exploring newsroom views about consultants in local TV: The effect of work roles and socialization
This exploratory study investigates how the newsroom impact of news consultants’ recommendations is affected by both a television journalist's work role and a journalist's experiences in the profession. The focus here was on news managers (producers, assignment editors, and news directors), with data coming from a survey of 16 news departments in small, medium and large markets. Results found that although a news manager's work role was somewhat …

Priorities of General Managers and News Directors in Anchor Hiring
Emerging theory suggests that news directors in local television emulate the thinking of their general managers. This possibility has proven difficult to test, however, because news directors and general managers generally have unrelated work roles. A study of anchor hiring, a duty they do have in common, reveals a shared concern about both journalistic and economic factors. Thus it may be a mistake to assume these managers always prioritize the …

Religious Commitment, Peace Activism, and Marital Violence in Quaker Families
Previous research using affiliation as a measure of religious influence suggests a lack of relationship between religion and marital violence. However, religious commitment, another measure of religious influence, is found in the present study of 290 Quaker spouses to differentiate levels of both communication and physical violence for both wives and husbands. High levels of peace activism are associated with low levels of marital violence for wi…
"Final say" Measures of Marital Power: Theoretical Critique and Empirical Findings From Five Studies in the United States and India
This study provides a more thorough test of the reliability and validity of the "final say" measure of marital power than has been provided in previous studies, which have been inconclusive in their findings. The reliability and validity of conflict- weighted, importance-weighted and unweighted versions of the "final say" measure are compared, along with husbands', wives', and children's responses. The data base is comprised of 5 samples gathered…
On the Validity of Relative Validity Studies of "Final-Say" Measures of Marital Power
The self-report final-say decision measure of marital power has been declared invalid on the basis of low levels of interrelationships between this and other measures of marital power. However, there are alternative explanations for the poor performance of this measure to which little attention has been given previously: improper analytical procedures and computational errors. Data from 51 pairs of parents are used to show the results of miscalcu…
