Application and Comparison of Different Models for Quantifying the Aquatic Community in a Dam-Controlled River
In order to develop a better model for quantifying aquatic community using environmental factors that are easy to get, we construct quantitative aquatic community models that utilize the different relationships between water environmental impact factors and aquatic biodiversity as follows: a multi-factor linear-based (MLE) model and a black box-based 'Genetic algorithm-BP artificial neural networks' (GA-BP) model. A comparison of the model effici…

A tale of two cities: Evidence from the Global South on established versus emerging cities' approaches to adaptive and sustainable water governance
The call for adaptive governance approaches to guide the sustainable transformation of urban water management systems is growing amongst scholars and policy professionals. Responding to this call, the Global North (GN) has focused significant evidence-based research on issues of scale, capacity, and institutional arrangements to support such transformations, whereas evidence from the Global South remains nascent. This paper contributes to the gro…
Increasing nutrient inputs risk a surge of nitrous oxide emissions from global mangrove ecosystems
Collaboration and infrastructure is needed to develop an African perspective on micro(nano)plastic pollution
Our current understanding of environmental micro(nano)plastic (MNP) pollution is driven by field and lab-based studies performed predominantly by and in wealthier countries. However, mismanaged waste and its consequences affect low- and middle-income countries over-proportionately. Evidence suggests that studies on MNP pollution in Africa are critically limited by the scientific infrastructure available, restricting research activities to opportu…
Hydrologic controls on the accumulation of different sized microplastics in the streambed sediments downstream of a wastewater treatment plant (Catalonia, Spain)
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) act as a point source of microplastics (MPs) to freshwater ecosystems. Although MP abundance has been linked to high-density population areas, the mechanisms of how river hydrodynamics and particle size influence MP accumulation in streams are still largely unknown. This study investigated the spatial distribution of MPs within streambed sediments downstream of a WWTP effluent in Cànoves stream (Montseny, Catal…

The influence of system heterogeneity on peat-surface temperature dynamics
Temperatures at the soil–atmosphere interface influence ecosystem function by driving nonlinear terrestrial biogeochemical, ecohydrological, and micrometeorological processes. Whilst climate, soil and vegetation controls on spatially average ecosystem temperatures are recognised, how interacting and heterogeneous ecosystem layers create spatio-temporal complex thermal ecosystems has not been determined. Such thermal hot spots and hot moments may …

Adapting to climate change impacts in Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia: The importance of environmental conditions and intangible cultural heritage
In western Micronesia, sea levels are rising at three to four times the global average, saltwater intrusion is impacting freshwater supplies and food production, and local cultures are being forced to respond. Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia (9.5N, 138E), consists of a cluster of four main islands (MI) and 14 coral atolls and smaller outer islands (OI) spread over 400,000 km 2 of ocean. This paper examines three aspects of Yap State's a…
On the eeriness of service robots with emotional capabilities
The uncanny valley hypothesis suggests that high human-likeness of humanoid robots is associated with feelings of uncanniness (eeriness, creepiness). Based on the literature on mind perception two aspects of human-likeness were distinguished. An experiment showed that a robot's capacity to feel (experience) leads to stronger feelings of uncanniness than a robot's capacity to plan ahead and to exert self-control (agency), which is still more uncan…
Measuring citizens’ implicit and explicit attitudes towards the European Union
Studies assessing citizens’ attitudes towards Europe have mostly used explicit concepts and measures. However, psychologists have shown that human behaviour is not only determined by explicit attitudes which can be assessed via self-report, but also by implicit attitudes which require indirect measurement. We combine a self-report questionnaire with an implicit Affective Misattribution Procedure for the first time in an online environment to esti…

Associations between the drill ( Mandrillus leucophaeus ) and sympatric monkeys in Korup National Park, Cameroon
Studies of polyspecific associations among African forest primates have primarily focused on arboreal Cercopithecus and Procolobus/Colobus species. We examined the association frequency of the terrestrial drill ( Mandrillus leucophaeus ) with six sympatric monkey species in Korup National Park, Cameroon, testing reports that Mandrillus associations are infrequent and transient. We conducted 3,284 km of trail walks for 12 months (February–June 200…
Has Monetary Policy Become More Efficient? A Cross‐Country Analysis
Over the past 20 years, macroeconomic performance has improved in industrialised and developing countries alike. In a broad cross-section of countries inflation volatility has fallen markedly while output variability has either fallen or risen only slightly. This increased stability can be attributed to some combination of more efficient monetary policy making, a reduction in the variability of supply shocks, and changes in the structure of the e…
