Translating community resilience theory into practice: A deliberative Delphi approach
Despite the availability of important theoretical insights that could enhance the resilience of rural communities to complex challenges, there is a paucity of guidance on how to apply these insights in practice. This article therefore presents and assesses a deliberative research process using the Delphi technique to elicit expert knowledge from 22 academics, community practitioners and policymakers working in roles related to community resilienc…
The Politics of Digital Agricultural Technologies: A Preliminary Review
Digital technologies are being developed and adopted across the agro‐food system, from farm to fork. Within decision‐making spaces, however, little attention is being paid to political factors arising from such technological developments. This review draws from critical social sciences to examine emerging technologies and big data systems in agriculture and assesses some key issues arising in the field. We begin with an introduction and review of…
Understanding the Impacts of Research Synthesis
Research synthesis is the integration of existing knowledge and research findings pertinent to an issue. The aim of synthesis is to increase the generality and applicability of those findings and to develop new knowledge through the process of integration. Synthesis is promoted as an approach that deals with the challenge of öinformation overload’, delivering products that further our understanding of problems and distil relevant evidence for dec…
Oil spill response capabilities and technologies for ice-covered Arctic marine waters: A review of recent developments and established practices
Renewed political and commercial interest in the resources of the Arctic, the reduction in the extent and thickness of sea ice, and the recent failings that led to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, have prompted industry and its regulatory agencies, governments, local communities and NGOs to look at all aspects of Arctic oil spill countermeasures with fresh eyes. This paper provides an overview of present oil spill response capabilities and techno…
Impact of climate change and seasonal trends on the fate of Arctic oil spills
We investigated the effects of a warmer climate, and seasonal trends, on the fate of oil spilled in the Arctic. Three well blowout scenarios, two shipping accidents and a pipeline rupture were considered. We used ensembles of numerical simulations, using the OSCAR oil spill model, with environmental data for the periods 2009-2012 and 2050-2053 (representing a warmer future) as inputs to the model. Future atmospheric forcing was based on the IPCC'…
Encouraging collaboration for the provision of ecosystem services at a landscape scale—Rethinking agri-environmental payments
Alcohol Intoxication and Occasional Smoking: A Field Investigation
The importance of using field studies to investigate the co-occurring use of alcohol and cigarettes is discussed
Competing Structure, Competing Views: The Role of Formal and Informal Social Structures in Shaping Stakeholder Perceptions

Stakeholder Analysis and Social Network Analysis in Natural Resource Management
The increasing use of stakeholder analysis in natural resource management reflects a growing recognition that stakeholders can and should influence environmental decision making. Stakeholder analysis can be used to avoid inflaming conflicts, ensure that the marginalization of certain groups is not reinforced, and fairly represent diverse interests. We present a case study from the Peak District National Park in the United Kingdom, where we used s…

The Effect of Parents on the Self-Appraisals of Children
We examine the reflected appraisal process as it applies to the effects of parents on the self-appraisals of children. Fourth through seventh grade children evaluated themselves in the areas of academics, athletics and physical attractiveness. Comparisons of these appraisals to parental appraisals indicate that mothers and fathers are just as favorable in their judgments of children as the children are themselves, and in the case of physical attr…
