Expecting a good quality of life in health: Assessing people with diverse diseases and conditions using the WHOQOL‐BREF
Background and objectives Fulfilling patient expectations is central to defining a good quality of life (QoL) in health. The WHOQOL‐BREF was developed using novel, person‐centred methods and is a generic patient‐reported outcomes measure (PROM). However, without robust psychometric performance, PROMs cannot be relied upon to assess individuals. This study investigated the WHOQOL‐BREF (UK), with this use in mind. Design Cross sectional with nested…
Comparing climate and cost impacts of reference levels for reducing emissions from deforestation
The climate benefit and economic cost of an international mechanism for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD) will depend on the design of reference levels for crediting emission reductions. We compare the impacts of six proposed reference level designs on emission reduction levels and on cost per emission reduction using a stylized partial equilibrium model (the open source impacts of REDD incentives spreadsheet; OSIRIS). …
Eduard NiESTEN, Richard RICE — Sustainable forest management and direct incentives for biodiversity conservation Current strategies for conservation are generally based on indirect incentives through which the habitat protection is an ancillary benefit from another activity. Sustainable forest management is typical of such a strategy. However it is neither financially feasible nor ecologically satisfactory. Only direct incentive strategies based …

Effectiveness of Parks in Protecting Tropical Biodiversity
We assessed the impacts of anthropogenic threats on 93 protected areas in 22 tropical countries to test the hypothesis that parks are an effective means to protect tropical biodiversity. We found that the majority of parks are successful at stopping land clearing, and to a lesser degree effective at mitigating logging, hunting, fire, and grazing. Park effectiveness correlates with basic management activities such as enforcement, boundary demarcat…

Economic Mobilization in Wartime Japan: Business, Bureaucracy, and Military in Conflict
Most studies of wartime Japan have assumed a close and complementary relationship between business and the military. This essay challenges this view by examining the complexities and tensions of wartime institutional dynamics. Thelackof a monolithic industrial and political structure hindered efficient economic mobilization. This can be seen in the industrial control associations (kōgyō tōsei kai), which were intended to be the most important lin…
