Environmental influences on children’s active travel
This study examines how the built environment influences children’s physical activity during school travel and within school neighborhoods in Olomouc, Czechia. The dataset combines accelerometer-measured activity, manually mapped routes, and GIS-based environmental indicators. Data from 161 eighth-grade pupils across ten primary schools were analyzed using 25 m route buffers and 500 m network service areas around schools. Variables included build…
Exploring Unconventional 3D Geovisualization Methods for Land Suitability Assessment
Effective management of urban development requires robust decision-support tools, including land suitability analysis and its visual communication. This study introduces and evaluates seven 3D geovisualization methods—Horizontal Planes, Point Cloud, 3D Surface, Vertical Planes, 3D Graduated Symbols, Prism Map, and Voxels—for visualizing land suitability for residential development in Jihlava, Czechia. Using five raster-based data layers derived f…
Exploring land suitability scenarios in Bratislava
For effective urban planning, land suitability analysis can be utilized to direct development toward the most appropriate areas. However, urban expansion must balance growth with spatial and legislative constraints. This study aims to evaluate these constraints within land suitability analysis for the city of Bratislava, focusing on Housing, Production and Storage, Civic Amenities, Leisure and Sport, and Urban Landscape Greenery. To achieve this, …
Implementation of GIS Tools in the Quality of Life Assessment of Czech Municipalities
Although quality of life is a phenomenon with a significant geographical component, its assessment is often only based on non-spatial statistical data. In Czechia, there are currently several assessments of quality of life at the level of municipalities, yet they do not consider the spatial aspect of the input indicators. This study uses the existing quality of life index compiled by the research agencies Median and the Aspen Institute, whose inp…
Influence of Covid-19 on night-time lights in Czechia
Night-Time Light (NTL) satellite imagery is widely recognized and valued as a powerful tool for spatial analysis and research. Despite its global popularity, there is absence of similar studies dealing with NTL intensity in Czechia. Using VIIRS/DNB data, our study focused on analyzing the changes in night-time light intensity before and during the coronavirus restrictions. These restrictions had a substantial impact on social and economic life, p…
Geoparticipation in the Czech municipalities
Participation is becoming not only a theoretical framework of EU and UN documents, but also a practical approach that many municipalities explore in order to build resilient, sustainable and smart cities. The paper presents a weighted Index of Geoparticipation for all municipalities in the Czech Republic (n = 6258). The index is an indicator-based value divided into three dimensions (communication, participation, transparency) that helps to evalu…

Two decades of ‘Brain Drain’ in Olomouc (Czechia)
This paper and accompanying map aim on the issue of brain drain (otherwise known as Human Capital Flight) concerning cultural and creative industries. The study is focused on the evaluation of Olomouc city, Czechia. In the case of a mid-sized city such as Olomouc, human capital flight is largely associated with cultural and creative fields, because it plays a significant part of the economy and character of the city. The ‘brain drain index’ of Cz…
Swipe versus multiple view
The comparison of multiple maps is a common fundamental process used by geographers to explore the world. The most frequently applied interactive methods for the comparison of maps are multiple view and swipe. Swipe allows the user to interactively drag and overlap two different maps. Multiple view is based on the simultaneous side-by-side display of several maps. The current paper presents an analysis of the use of these two map comparison techn…
Sustainable Spatial and Temporal Development of Land Prices
Only a limited number of studies have examined land price issues based on official land price maps. A very unique timeline of official land price maps (2006–2019) allowed research to be conducted on four Czech cities (Prague, Olomouc, Ostrava, and Zlín). The main aim of the research was to describe the links between land price, land use types, and macroeconomic indicators, and to compare temporal changes of these links in four cities of different…
Land suitability assessment of the Olomouc region
This paper and accompanying maps focus on a land suitability assessment of the Olomouc region in the Czech Republic. All results were calculated in Urban Planner, a model designed by the authors of this paper. The method of calculation is based on a multi-criteria analysis (weighted overlay method), respects the principles of sustainable development, and allows for execution of several scenarios. The main result of this work is a set of maps. The…
Attitudes and Motivation to Use Public or Individual Transport
This paper presents the results of a quantitative study in the Czech Republic to understand travellers' attitudes towards and motivation to use different means of transport. Two Czech cities, Olomouc and Ostrava, are compared from the point of view of factors influencing spatial and temporal patterns and citizen's selection of transport mode and transport behaviour (range and daily movements of the population, perception of the quality of public …
Analytical material for planning in Olomouc, Czech Republic
Urban planning in the Czech Republic is governed by the Act No. 183/2006 Coll., the Construction Act and the Ministry Decree No. 500/2006 Coll. These laws make it an obligation to create and maintain up to date Analytical Materials for Planning (Územně analytické podklady – UAP) containing four specific maps showing Territories Requiring Preservation, Territorial Challenges, Territorial Limits and Territorial Concepts. Currently, there is no unif…
Using a fuzzy inference system to delimit rural and urban municipalities in the Czech republic in 2010
Due to the suburbanisation process, it is becoming more difficult to properly define rural and urban areas in the Czech Republic. This delimitation problem has been intensively studied in Europe, including the Czech Republic, for decades, but only so-called ‘crisp’ rules have been set for the categorisation of urban and rural. This is no longer satisfactory because of substantial population movements. Our research focuses on applying fuzzy set th…
Development of Olomouc city in 1930–2009
The paper and the maps deal with analysis of Olomouc city development that was based on GIS processing. The first step of the following analysis was digitization of all city plans created in the twentieth century. The new city plan that is going to be finalized in 2011 was also included in this analysis. Altogether four city plans from 1930, 1955, 1985 and 1999 were collected, digitized and analyzed. The main result of this work is a set of maps …
