  • Climatology and Society

    Stanley V Gregory, Stanley Gregory•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•1991•References: 5

The role of climate as a critical factor affecting the nature of the physical environment has been a traditional concern of geographers. Recently these concerns have been replaced by more urgent issues –atmospheric pollution, acid rain, global warming and ozone depletion. Decisions by the global society on how and at what level of well being human life should be organised are radically changing the gaseous character of the Earth's atmosphere. As …

  • Spatial Patterns of Annual July‐June Rainfall Fluctuations in Tropical Queensland, 1900/01 to 1979/80

    Open Access•Stanley V Gregory, S GREGORY•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•1991•References: 11

Annual July‐June (rather than January‐December) rainfall is considered for the first 80 years of this century Le. 1900/01 to 1979/80, for 24 stations with uninterrupted records in tropical Queensland The aim is to define and examine spatial patterns of rainfall fluctuations, both in terms of categories of annual rainfall patterns and regional units with roughly comparable annual rainfall fluctuations. The essential characteristics of the categori…

been defined simply as unusually low monsoon rainfall, in terms of: the driest ten per cent of years; deficits below the average of more than 20 per cent; larger deficits in some regions. Temporal changes in the frequency of these conditions across all 30year and 10-year periods are graphed and discussed for each region, and for All-India, and those periods with frequencies greater than might be expected at random are distinguished. Major contras…

Three questions are asked — why teach statistics? what statistics to teach? how to teach them? The first is considered in terms of the degree itself, general academic training, and future occupational use; the second is viewed in terms of the needs of all geography students, not just specialists or potential researchers; the third arises directly from the previous two discussions. Gregory, Stanley V Gregory et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1956•Cited by: 1

Despite the numerous studies which have been made of rainfall in Britain, there is one problem which so far ha not received adequate attention. Although it is appreciated that annual rainfall values have fluctuated considerably over the years, and also that these fluctuations vary from one part of Britain to another, there has been no delimitation of those areas within which the trend of annual rainfall is virtually comparable for all localities.…
