Strategic Foresight for Sustainable Rural Landscapes
Rural landscapes are increasingly challenged by climate change, ecosystem degradation, and socio‐economic transitions, creating an urgent need for strategic foresight and scenario planning to guide sustainable development. This study integrates these approaches to identify key factors shaping the future of socio‐ecological systems and to develop targeted interventions by recognizing underlying trends, challenges, and potential drivers. The method…

Organizational Network Transformation for Rural Sustainability
This study evaluates how Iran’s Rural Constellation Development and Prosperity Plan (RCDPP) transformed governance networks in Gachsaran County’s semi-arid rural areas. Using longitudinal Social Network Analysis (SNA) of 22 organizations, we observed increased network density (48% to 62.3%), reduced centralization (24.3% to 18.4%), and enhanced reciprocity (27.6% to 35.8%). These shifts reflect a transition from hierarchical to polycentric govern…

The analysis of indigenous ecological knowledge and adaptive local initiatives in water resources management in southern Iran
Measuring the farmers’ vulnerability to climate change in Tashk and Bakhtegan Lakes in Iran
This study used a descriptive-analytical method to assess how vulnerable farmers in Fars Province's rural regions near the Tashk and Bakhtegan lakes are to the effects of climate change. For this purpose, 17 villages around Tashk and Bakhtegan lakes with 2511 households, who are engaged in agricultural activities, were investigated. To achieve the research goals, a broad range of indexes were determined with the dimensions of exposure, sensitivit…

Tracing water governance across different levels in Iran
Social capital and farmers’ leadership in Iranian rural communities
This study aimed to analyze the role of social capital and leadership in improving the adaptive capacity of Iranian pistachio farmers by using Social Network Analysis (SNA). The results indicate that the studied network is not a dense network, and there are few reciprocal and face-to-face relations among farmers. The findings also illustrate that in all cooperative links, there were no noticeable bridging links among the farmers and their tendenc…

Community Resilience and Consequence Management of Pollution Intrusion Into Water Distribution Network
Contamination intrusion into the municipal water distribution network (WDN) without appropriate action may lead to disaster. This study examined community resilience (CR) and its effects on optimal consequence management (CM) plans. CR was measured by five dimensions: governance, preparedness, social learning, social trust, and collective efficacy. The above dimensions were measured by conducting a structured questionnaire survey, and CR was then…
Bonding Social Capital of Rural Women in Southwest Iran
The establishment of local communal organizations is a unique strategy of rural communities to build resilience against economic challenges. Shirvareh is traditionally recognized as an important communal organization of women in Southwestern Iran for managing dairy production and securing their livelihood. Preserving this vital social institution and its associated indigenous knowledge was the main motivation of this study to examine factors infl…
Harnessing indigenous knowledge for climate change-resilient water management – lessons from an ethnographic case study in Iran
Through an in-depth ethnographic case study, we explore water management practices within the Jiroft County province in Iran and discuss the applicability of indigenous knowledge of locally-based sustainable water management initiatives to the resource governance challenges of arid and drought-prone regions across the world. The relationship between community social structure, indigenous knowledge, water management technologies and practices, and…
Role of Social Network Measurements in Improving Adaptive Capacity
This study aims at exploring ways of increasing adaptive capacity and reducing vulnerability of farmers in the face of water scarcity through establishing a link between social network indicators and the dimensions of adaptive capacity. For this purpose, a Social Network Analysis (SNA) model along with a Structural Equation Model was developed to investigate the effects of SNA indices on the dimensions influencing the adaptive capacity of the wat…
