Creating a pedagogical framework to support pre-service teacher planning of practical work in science education
Practical work is a distinctive feature of science education and for many students can be an aspect which draws them to the sciences. Yet the value of practical work for enhancing student learning in the ways teachers intend has been contested, leading to criticisms of practical working being unproductive, confusing and ill-conceived. To support pre-service teachers’ pedagogical knowledge development for planning for practical work, we repurpose …
Understanding the Social and Cognitive Nature of Collaboration: Implications for Practice
Understanding how cognition develops as a result of collaboration is a continuing educational endeavour along with identifying effective strategies and understandings related to collaborative learning. With this endeavour in mind, this paper reports on findings from a research project that examined the mechanisms and processes utilised by teachers to enhance collaboration in a problem-based learning approach to school-based STEM education. The re…
Sulla and Electoral Authoritarianism
This article explores L. Cornelius Sulla's control of elections during his dictatorship from 82 to 80 b.c. and analyzes the immediate impact of this control on elections in Rome in the early 70s. Drawing on approaches employed by political science to help understand the intent behind holding uncompetitive "authoritarian elections," it offers a novel approach to the study of ancient elections. It then explores elections in the immediate aftermath …
Understanding the complex power dynamics that shape collaboration and social learning in multi-stakeholder water governance
The relationship between power dynamics and decision making in natural resource management is central to explaining governance outcomes. Contemporary catchment governance is increasingly characterized by the interaction of multiple stakeholder groups, which has shifted processes like collaboration and social learning into the focus of water governance research and related fields. Because collaboration and social learning are effective tools for r…
Protocols of Listening
This article presents six separate but connected understandings of a digital platform of listening vocabularies and protocols produced in the context of Listening Across Disciplines II, (LxDII) a cross- and transdisciplinary research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK (AHRC), conducted by the authors from 2018 to 2022. This research project set out to investigate and promote the use of listening across arts, humanities…
Principles of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in STEM Education: Using Expert Wisdom and Research to Frame Educational Practice
Developing teacher knowledge, skills, and confidence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is critical to supporting a culture of innovation and productivity across the population. Such capacity building is also necessary for the development of STEM literacies involving the ability to identify, apply, and integrate concepts from STEM domains toward understanding complex problems, and innovating to solve them. Howev…
Elevation and Child Linear Growth in Nepal
The relationship between elevation of residence and a child's linear growth was studied using data for 8824 children below the age of 5 years born between 2001 and 2016 at elevations ranging from 50 to 3200 m above sea level in Nepal. Multiple regression was used to measure the role of a variety of household and community factors in explaining the observed elevation effect. A negative association was found between elevation and linear growth that…
Elections in the Time of Cinna
According to Livy’s Periochae, L. Cornelius Cinna and C. Marius were elected to the consulship of 86 BC ‘without recourse to any electoral assembly’ (citra ulla comitia). This statement is often either dismissed outright or accepted as an accurate description of the constitutional irregularities of the Cinnanum tempus. This paper investigates how elections were conducted during this period, using the consular elections for 86 as a test case. It a…
Search and Rescue in the Arctic: Is the U.S. Prepared?
Explores the U.S. capability to handle the Arctic Search and Rescue (SAR) Agreement, a landmark treaty that gives the U.S. responsibility for conducting SAR in a slice of territory that surrounds Alaska and stretches to the North Pole.
Environmental Sustainability: A Case of Policy Implementation Failure?
For a generation, governments around the world have been committed to sustainable development as a policy goal. This has been supported by an array of new policies ranging from international agreements, to national strategies, environmental laws at many levels of government, regional programs, and local plans. Despite these efforts, decades of scientific monitoring indicate that the world is no closer to environmental sustainability and in many r…

Britain and the Origin of the Vietnam War: UK Policy in Indo-China, 1943-50 (Global Conflict Since 1945)
God-State Idea in Modern Education: Response
Professor Drake's paper begins by suggesting that more careful study of the historical relation between religion and education would help both to upgrade the teaching profession and to clarify the confusion in present-day educational policy. Many of us would, I think, agree. The footnote references in the body of the paper, however, indicate that it rests upon only three volumes dealing with the facts of educational history: John Brubacher, Histo…
