  • Identifying and Classifying Observed Emotions in Informal Science Learning Environments Using the Emotions Observational Tool (Emotool)

Open Access•Neta Shaby, Luisa Medeiros Massarani et al.•ARTICLE•Research in Science Education•2026

Informal science settings, such as zoos, aquariums, and science centers, naturally spark emotions ranging from curiosity and excitement to frustration. Yet, studying emotional experiences in informal science learning (ISL) environments has been difficult, largely due to the challenges of measuring emotions in real time. Traditional methods, including self-reports, physiological measures, and observational approaches, offer useful insights but als…

  • Iinvent pathways and practices

    Open Access•Susan R M Rowe, Adam Talamantes et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2024

Rural communities need skilled innovators who engage as community members, support economic opportunities, and develop novel ways to solve local problems. Through innovation, Invention Education (IvE) is one way to promote the creativity and problem-solving needed to restore economic vitality to regions of the rural US. IvE pathways support a skilled workforce that communities can draw upon to solve complex problems. Introductory IvE experiences …

  • Teacher Perceptions of Training and Pedagogical Value of Cross-Reality and Sensor Data from Smart Buildings

Open Access•Shawn Rowe, Mariapaola Riggio et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2020

This paper discusses elementary, and secondary (K-12) teachers’ perceptions of cross-reality (XR) tools for data visualization and use of sensor data from the built environment in classroom curricula. Our objective was to explore the use of sensor-informed XR in the built environment and civil engineering (BECE) field to support K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiential learning and foster BECE-related career awar…

  • A Experiência De Adolescentes Ao Visitar Um Museu De Ciência

Open Access•Luisa Medeiros Massarani, Gabriela Reznik et al.•ARTICLE•Ensaio•2019•Cited by: 3

  • Evolving interest and sense of self in an environmental citizen science program

    Open Access•Yurong He, Julia K Parrish et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2019

He, Y., J. K. Parrish, S. Rowe, and T. Jones. 2019. Evolving interest and sense of self in an environmental citizen science program. Ecology and Society 24(2):33. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-10956-240233

  • Families talking about ecology at touch tanks

Charles Kopczak, James Kisiel et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2013•Cited by: 1

Research has demonstrated that conversations among museum, aquarium, and zoo visitors can be a clear indication of active learning, engagement, and participation in scientific reasoning. This descriptive study sought to determine the extent of talk about ecology-related topics exhibited by family groups visiting marine touch tanks at four Pacific coast aquariums. In particular, conversations were examined to determine the kinds of ecology topics …

  • Visitor Motivations Across Three Informal Education Institutions

    Shawn Rowe, Abby Nickels•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2011

Recent studies suggest that visitors’ situated museum identities may be examined through the motivations expressed during visits to zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and other museums. This article examines a tool published by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and J. Falk, Heimlich, and Bronnenkant (2008) for documenting visitors’ motivations at zoos, aquariums, and other informal education settings and compares motivations for visiti…

  • Seeing satellite data

Open Access•Molly Phipps, Shawn Rowe•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2010

Complex scientific visualizations are becoming standard parts of many educational experiences, both in and out of schools. We found that satellite visualizations used by ocean scientists were difficult for teachers, students, and museum visitors to understand. The research reported on here documents some of those difficulties and explores alternate visualizations that proved more robust for novice users of the data. Five different visualizations …

  • Incorporating Handheld Computers into a Public Science Center

Molly Phipps, Shawn Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2008

The feasibility of using handheld computers to customize learning opportunities was explored using a design research process with 68 visitor groups to a small interactive science museum and aquarium. The authors discuss the iterations of the research process, reasons given for both using and not using the handheld computers, and findings related to participants' prior use of handheld computers and their perception of the effects of using the devi…

  • Linking Little Narratives to Big Ones

    Open Access•Shawn Rowe, Shawn M Rowe et al.•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•2002•Cited by: 18•References: 3

Developing an account of the encounter between vernacular and official (Bodnar, 1992) mediational means, this paper explores some of the ways narratives about history come into dialogic contact in history museums. We argue that the history museum acts as a public forum where personal lives may be linked more or less closely to collectives through encounters among narratives produced by the museum and its visitors. Through analysis of exhibits at …
