  • Assessing visitor responses to Luke Jerram’s Gaia installation in Lincoln Cathedral

Open Access•Nick Brown, Peter Neil et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2025

For six days during the period that Lincoln Cathedral hosted Luke Jerram’s installation, Gaia, visitors were invited to reflect on the world and to write on postcards prayers and well wishes for the world. Analysis of the content of 112 postcards demonstrated that the installation stirred people to reflect on things that really mattered to them. Seven main themes were identified, four concerning vulnerability and three concerning faith and values…

  • Spirituality of singers

    Open Access•Nick Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2025

This article derives from a study into the spiritual experiences and theological understanding of lay singers within cathedral choirs. This took place in two stages: a series of group conversations to establish themes, and more in-depth individual interviews. The data highlighted that the experience of lay singers was shaped by theological tradition and institutional structures within their historical context. Using Stringer’s classification of i…

  • Appropriate approaches for practitioners in international programs

    Leandra Rhodes-Dicker, Mariny Chheang et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2025•References: 10

Ensuring appropriate solutions for communities is an objective emphasised across international development, including the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sector. However, attention is rarely paid to ensuring practitioners have appropriate approaches to provide these solutions. Many approaches fail to account for or adapt to differences in how practitioners think and speak, and these concerns are notable for international collaborations wher…

  • Why Family Law Treats Female Genital Mutilation and Circumcision Differently

Open Access•Nick Brown•ARTICLE•Oxford Journal of Law and Religion•2024

Family law in England and Wales draws a fundamental and categoric distinction between female genital mutilation (FGM) and male circumcision (circumcision). The former is a criminal abuse of human rights which, for the purposes of section 31 of the Children Act 1989, can never fall within the ambit of reasonable parenting. The latter is, in principle, reasonable and is therefore not in itself a basis upon which the state can seek to intervene in f…

  • Incidence and outcomes of intrapartum-related neonatal encephalopathy in low-income and middle-income countries

Open Access•Antti Juhani Kukka, Sara Waheddoost et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

  • Predictors of diarrheal mortality and patterns of caregiver health seeking behavior in in Karachi, Pakistan

Open Access•Farah Naz Qamar, Umber Zaman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2016

BACKGROUND: Pakistan is unfortunately among the five countries that contributed to the most deaths due to diarrhea and pneumonia in 2010. To explore factors associated with diarrheal deaths we assessed care-seeking behavior and other predictors of diarrhea-related mortality in children in selected low-income peri-urban communities of Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: A mixed methods study (qualitative and quantitative) using matched case-control design…

  • Prevalence and predictors of adult hypertension in Kabul, Afghanistan

Open Access•Khwaja Mir Islam Saeed, Mohammad Hafez Rasooly et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2014

Hypertension is a major public health problem in Afghan adults. We have identified a number of predictors which have potential for guiding interventions

  • Never Lost for Words

    Open Access•Nick Brown•ARTICLE•Public history review•2014

As a modern, designed, self-consciously experimental national capital, Canberra poses distinct questions, and problems, for public history. Famously derided as lacking community - 'a city without a soul'; 'a good sheep station spoiled' - it has also been shaped by a succession of planning practices, phases of immigration, and service provision, which have fostered their own models and experiences of community. On the one hand, as Ruth Atkins obse…

  • Early growth and markers of cardiovascular risk in Keralan children in the Integrated Child Development Scheme

Open Access•Nick Brown, Chaniyil Krishnan Sasidharan et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2010

Objective Low birth weight is associated with increased lifelong morbidity. Kerala has a renowned, low-cost, maternal–child health system in which is couched universal access to the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), central to which is community-based maternal–infant nutritional supplementation. We assessed whether children in this environment showed enhanced birth weight and postnatal growth and whether the evolution of early markers o…

  • Risky creatures

    Nick Brown, Mike Michael•ARTICLE•Health Risk & Society•2004

Novel biotechnologies present acute difficulties to regulation for the very reason that they traverse the boundaries between existing regulatory authorities, their terms of reference, their disciplinary capabilities, and so on. To this extent, they are hybrid phenomena, difficult to categorise and a source of acute uncertainty. Moreover, most biotechnologies confuse and trouble the distinctions between different species. These species disruptions…

  • The Conservatism of Radical Theology

    Nick Brown•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2002

This article is principally intended to argue something that is counter-intuitive, namely that despite the socialist values of a number of radical liberal Christian and post-Christian writers the philosophical outlook and language of this phase of religious thought focuses upon some key ideas which find important parallels in Conservative philosophy. This is not in any way to imply that these ideas do not find parallels in other political philoso…

  • Schools learning from other schools

Jean Rudduck, Mary Berry et al.•ARTICLE•Research Papers in Education•2000•References: 1

In recent years policy makers have strengthened their belief that competition will raise standards. This paper describes what happened when a group of schools in one LEA took part in a school improvement project that supported them in learning from each other in a climate of competition. Issues that made a difference to teachers' readiness to engage with other schools included these: whether teachers are open about the possibility of learning fro…
