  • Talking in Timor‐Leste

    Open Access•Joseph R Coffey, Victoria Baranov et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Science•2026

Children's early experiences with language are influenced by socioeconomic and cultural factors that vary greatly across societies. By expanding the geographical diversity of language acquisition studies, researchers are able to answer broader questions about mechanisms linking children's speech input to their learning process. We present a large-scale study of 277 children between 11 and 58 months old growing up in Timor-Leste, an island nation …

  • An examination of multiple illness and social related stressors during the Covid-19 pandemic on maternal and child mental health; findings from a birth cohort in rural Pakistan

Open Access•Joanna Maselko, Amanda Collins et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

These findings provide evidence of additional pathways through which prolonged global events, like the pandemic, can have multigenerational mental health impacts

  • Effects of a maternal psychosocial intervention on hair derived biomarkers of HPA axis function in mothers and children in rural Pakistan

Open Access•Victoria Baranov, Alan Frost et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Mental Health•2022

Disruptions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are thought to be key neuroendocrine mechanisms involved in psychopathology and may have intergenerational impacts. Hair-derived HPA hormones offer a measure of long-term HPA axis activity that may be useful in assessing maternal and infant health. Building on a community-based randomized control trial of a perinatal depression intervention in Pakistan, we examine intervention effects o…

  • Theoretical Underpinnings and Meta-analysis of the Effects of Cash Transfers on Intimate Partner Violence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Victoria Baranov, Lisa Cameron et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2021

The number of studies examining the effects of cash transfer (CT) programs on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) has rapidly grown over the last decade. Depending on how violence is modelled, CTs could either increase, decrease or have an ambiguous effect on violence. This paper provides a survey of the theoretical and quantitative empirical literature on the effects of CTs on IPV. We place the existing theories in the context of an overarching mode…

  • Maternal Depression, Women’s Empowerment, and Parental Investment

Victoria Baranov, Sonia Bhalotra et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2020

We evaluate the medium-term impacts of treating maternal depression on women’s mental health, financial empowerment, and parenting decisions. We leverage variation induced by a cluster-randomized controlled trial that provided psychotherapy to 903 prenatally depressed mothers in rural Pakistan. It was one of the world’s largest psych otherapy interventions, and it dramatically reduced postpartum depression. Seven years after psychotherapy conclud…

  • The contribution of grandmother involvement to child growth and development

    Open Access•Esther O Chung, A K Hagaman et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood interventions primarily focus on the mother-child relationship, but grandmothers are often critical in childcare in low-resource settings. Prior research is mixed on how grandmother involvement influences child outcomes and there is a paucity of research on grandmother caregiving in low-income and middle-income countries. We examined the role of grandmother involvement on child growth and development in the first 2 y…

  • Treatment as insurance

Open Access•Sarah Dickerson, Victoria Baranov et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2020•References: 30

Many countries have expanded insurance programmes in an effort to achieve universal health coverage (UHC). We assess a complementary path toward financial risk protection: increased access to technologies that improve health and reduce the risk of large health expenditures. Malawi has provided free HIV treatment since 2004 with significant US Government support. We investigate the impact of treatment access on medical spending, capacity to pay an…

  • Can Positive Psychology Improve Psychological Well-Being and Economic Decision-Making? Experimental Evidence from Kenya

Victoria Baranov, Johannes Haushofer et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 66

We conduct a randomized experiment to evaluate the effect of a light-touch, low-cost psychological intervention on psychological well-being and economic decision-making in a developing country setting. Residents of an informal settlement in Kenya were randomly assigned to participate in best-practice exercises designed to promote gratitude, self-affirmation, and aspirations. We show that although we were successful in manipulating the psychologic…
