Do trade agreements contribute to the decline in labor share? Evidence from Latin American countries
Effect of comprehensive smoke-free legislation on the tourism industry in countries of the Caribbean Community
Objective. To assess whether the introduction of comprehensive smoke-free legislation affected tourism in four Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries – Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. Methods. We compared the evolution of three tourism variables – tourist arrivals, tourist expenditure, and average length of stay – in a country implementing smoke-free environments (treated country) with the evolution of these variables in the …
Impact of a recent tobacco tax reform in Argentina
The literature on policies for the control of the tobacco epidemic suggests that increasing excise taxes on the consumption of tobacco products is the most cost-effective policy. Cigarette tax structure in Argentina is very complex. All the tax bases for cigarette consumption taxes are related and, therefore, any modification of a tax affects the collection of the rest of the taxes. This is important given that funds raised by one of the taxes, t…
How Raising Tobacco Prices Affects the Decision to Start and Quit Smoking: Evidence from Argentina
We used a two-part model for the estimation of the price elasticity of participation and consumption of cigarettes by the duration of the smoking habit and a continuous-time split-population model for the estimation of prevalence and duration of smoking onset and smoking addiction, allowing for covariates in the participation component of the model. Results: We computed the total price elasticity of consumption of cigarettes by quartiles of addic…
Water Expansions in Shantytowns: Health and Savings
This paper examines the effects of the expansion of the water network in urban shantytowns in Argentina. We find large reductions in the presence, frequency and severity of diarrhoea episodes among children reached by network expansions relative to a control group. Moreover, expanded connections induce savings in water expenditures, as these families are able to substitute piped water for more expensive and distant sources of water provision. The…
Global Factors and Emerging Market Spreads
This article shows that a large fraction of the time variability of emerging market bond spreads is explained by the evolution of global factors such as risk appetite, global liquidity and contagion from systemic events such as the Russian default. This link is robust to the inclusion of country-specific factors and helps to provide accurate long-run predictions. By contrast, changes in credit ratings appear to lag spread movements and elicit lit…
Why Have Urban Poverty and Income Inequality Increased So Much? Argentina, 1991-2001
This article analyzes the trends in income inequality and poverty among Argentine households during the nineties. We assess the effect of changes in labor force participation, unemployment, educational levels, and returns to individual characteristics on income inequality and poverty by using a microsimulation approach. We found that unemployment accounts for a large part of the increase in income inequality and poverty experienced in the past de…
