Family Support and Birth Outcomes among Second-Generation Mexican Immigrants
This article analyzes the experiences of Mexican immigrants, one of the largest and fastest growing immigrant groups. Extensive interviews were conducted with 41 Mexican-American women about their life, pregnancy, and childbirth experiences. The women recently had given birth to either a low-birth-weight or a normal-birth-weight baby. Observing their lives through the lens of birth outcomes-a powerful marker for social and economic well-being-we …
The Great Flood of 1993
In 1993, the Midwest endured a "one-hundred year flood." Although aid was available from public and private sources, some communities were much less successful than others in obtaining assistance and resources. This study contrasts response and recovery from the flood in five communities. The study was initiated by 22 undergraduate students of social work community practice. Poverty, Family Support, and Well-Being of Infants
Data reveal that despite high levels of poverty, Mexican immigrants have relatively few low birth weight babies. This unusual pattern suggests that there are "protective" social factors mediating the effects of povertyperhaps especially family support. Our study, based on in-depth interviews with immigrant women in Chicago, finds that family support does protect some women from delivering a low birth weight infant but it does not protect women li…
