This paper examines the substantive meaning and limitations of the concept of choice of technique, developed in the context of a test of logical consistency of the neoclassical parable concerning the relation between techniques of production and distribution of income in capitalist economies, and commonly used as a vehicle to support propositions about changes in technology. This concept is shown to rest on a foundation of logical time that is an…

Related questions were asked about law enforcement notification, the degree of physical injuries sustain…
Economic Growth and Equity: Complements or Opposites
There is no automatic mechanism in a market economy to guarantee reduced inequality of income with growth. Some theories lead us to expect just the opposite. At best, there are self-limiting cyclical effects, associated with changes in unemployment. U.S. economic growth has actually been quite slow since the 1950s. Besides, there are structural barriers to reduced inequality that operate with or without growth. Historical evidence for different c…

Capitalist Exploitation and Black Labor: Some Conceptual Issues
The preceding discussion sets up, on a systematic theoretical basis, the precise analytical meaning of the concept of exploitation. This concept is shown to have meaning with reference to the process of production of surplus value and its appropriation as profits, interest, rent, taxes, etc. within a system of capitalist relations based on free exchange of commodities, including labor power, and dominance of capital over property and production. …
Marxian Exploitation and Domestic Colonialism: A Reply
V academics analyzing the conditions of black Americans have employed a Marxist analysis. An important exception is Donald J. Harris who presented such a framework in the pages of this Review. 1 His paper is divided broadly into three parts. The first, using my work as a point of departure, 2 is devoted to a critique of the concept of the black ghetto as an internal colony. A second part of the papers develops an alternative formulation using a c…
