  • Incentivizing Demand for Supply-Constrained Care

Open Access•Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2024

If overcrowding harms health care quality, the impacts of encouraging more people to use services are not obvious. Impacts will depend on whether marginal entrants benefit and whether they benefit enough to offset the congestion externalities imposed on inframarginal users. We develop a general-equilibrium model that formalizes these ideas. We examine them empirically by studying JSY, a program in India that paid women to give birth in medical fa…

  • Mothers' Social Networks and Socioeconomic Gradients of Isolation

Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•References: 52

Social connections are fundamental to human well-being. We examine the social networks of mothers of young children in rural Odisha, India. Gendered norms around marriage, mobility, and work likely shape this group’s opportunities to form and maintain ties. We track 2, 170 mothers’ networks over 4 years and find a high degree of isolation. Wealthier women and women from more-advantaged castes and tribes have smaller networks than their less-advan…

  • The educational experiences of Indian children during Covid-19

Open Access•Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2023

We explore the educational experiences of Indian children during the COVID-19 pandemic, using time-use and household expenditure data from a panel of over 110,000 households with school-aged children. We find that both 12–18-year old's average learning time and their average households’ expenditure on education more than halved following the March 2020 school closures. Both had barely recovered by the end of 2021 throughout a period of phased but…

  • Inequalities in Children's Experiences of Home Learning during the Covid‐19 Lockdown in England

Open Access•Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew et al.•ARTICLE•Fiscal Studies•2020

This paper combines novel data on the time use, home‐learning practices and economic circumstances of families with children during the COVID‐19 lockdown with pre‐lockdown data from the UK Time Use Survey to characterise the time use of children and how it changed during lockdown, and to gauge the extent to which changes in time use and learning practices during this period are likely to reinforce the already large gaps in educational attainment …

  • Why is multiple micronutrient powder ineffective at reducing anaemia among 12–24 month olds in Colombia? Evidence from a randomised controlled trial

Open Access•Alison Andrews, Orazio Attanasio et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2016

In Colombia's bottom socio-economic strata, 46.6% of children under two are anaemic. A prevalence of above 20% falls within the WHO guidelines for daily supplementation with multiple micronutrient powder (MNP). To evaluate the effect of daily MNP supplementation on anaemia amongst Colombian children aged 12-24 months we ran a cluster RCT ( n =1440). In previous work, we found the intervention had no impact on haemoglobin or anaemia in this popula…

  • Challenging Boundaries to ‘Employability’

    Open Access•Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew•ARTICLE•Social Policy and Society•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article is based on a case study of women apprentices and workers in a ‘non-traditional’ occupation for women, engineering construction. The article argues that the concept of ‘employability’ is not gender neutral, and that gendered assumptions about who is and is not ‘employable’ for particular work can disadvantage women seeking training and work in non-traditional industries or dissuade them from applying to do so. Approaches to employabi…
