Open Access•Adriana Pérez, Belinda M Reininger et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•2006

Nearly one-third of the students in both Matamoros and the LRGV are at risk for overweight or are overweight. Implementation of interventions on healthful dietary choices and participation in physical education classes and sports teams are essential for reducing the extremely high prevalence of overweight among students on both sides of the Texas/Mexico border

  • Stress within a bicultural context for adolescents of Mexican descent

    Andrea J Romero, Robert E Roberts•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2003•Cited by: 138•References: 17

Folkman and Lazarus's theory of stress and coping was used to develop a measure assessing the perceived stress within a bicultural context. Middle school students of Mexican descent (N = 881) reported their perceived stress from intergenerational acculturation gaps, within-group discrimination, out-group discrimination, and monolingual stress. Although immigrant youths reported more total number of stressors, U.S.-born youths reported more stress…

  • The Impact of Multiple Dimensions of Ethnic Identity on Discrimination and Adolescents’ Self‐Estees

    Open Access•Andrea J Romero, Robert E Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social…•2003•Cited by: 120•References: 11

The rejection‐identification model is investigated with multiple dimensions of ethnic identity in a sample of Mexican American youth. It is hypothesized that more perceived discrimination will be associated with higher ethnic identity in general, but that the multiple dimensions of ethnic identity will be associated differentially with discrimination. Higher perceived discrimination will be associated with more ethnic exploration and less ethnic …

  • Ethnocultural variables and attitudes toward cultural socialization of children

Open Access•Andrea J Romero, Israel Cu llar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Psychology•2000•References: 16

Cultural socialization is the transmission of cultural values and norms to one's children. The current study presents a new scale to assess parental socialization attitudes to both the U.S. American culture and the Latino culture. The scale is based on a social cognitive model of cultural socialization and cultural values of independence and interdependence. It was hypothesized that individuals who have lower acculturation, more recent generation…

    Robert E Roberts, Sarah J Shema et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1999

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to provide data on the prevalence of insomnia and hypersomnia among older persons, the stability of these sleep complaints over time, and factors associated with disturbed sleep, in particular age. METHOD: Data on symptoms of insomnia and hypersomnia were examined for the 1994 to 1995 cohort of the Alameda County Study. In addition to age, the effects of gender, education, marital status, chronic medical co…

The purpose for this study was to examine the structure and construct validity of a measure of ethnic identity among young adolescents from diverse ethnic groups. Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades (N = 5,423) from diverse ethnic groups completed the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), measures of psychological well-being and a measure of salience of ethnicity. Factor analyses of data for the three largest ethnic groups (Europea…

  • Perception of discrimination and ethnocultural variables in a diverse group of adolescents

    Open Access•Andrea J Romero, Robert E Roberts•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•1998

Despite current interest in the multi-dimensionality of culture and ethnicity there are few studies that have explored the role of discrimination with ethnocultural variables. In this study social identity theory was used as a framework to test the relation between discrimination and components of ethnic identity, and attitudes towards out-groups. A school-based survey in a large south-west metropolitan area in 1994 was undertaken with students (…

Peter M Lewinsohn, John R Seeley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology and Aging•1997

The efficacy of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) as a screener for clinical depression was examined in a sample of 1,005 community-residing adults (age range = 50-96). Presence of a depressive disorder was determined by diagnostic interview. Analyses revealed that neither age, gender, cognitive impairment, functional impairment, physical disease, nor social desirability had a significant negative effect on the psychom…

  • Ethnocultural Differences in Prevalence of Adolescent Depression

Data from an ethnically diverse sample of middle school (Grades 6–8) students ( n = 5,423) are analyzed for ethnic differences in major depression. The point prevalence of major depression was 8.4% without and 4.3% with impairment. Data were sufficient to calculate prevalences for nine ethnic groups. Prevalences adjusted for impairment ranged from 1.9% for youths of Chinese descent to 6.6% for those of Mexican decent. African and Mexican American…

    Open Access•Robert E L Roberts, Robert E Roberts•ARTICLE•Sociological Quarterly•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 8

Popular press accounts of genital herpes (herpes simplex virus-II) are presented as sites for the production of symbolic stigma. Close readings of 141 magazine articles about HSV-II explore the discursive practices that constituted herpetic as a discredited identity. The article critiques these stigmatizing practices on two levels: (1) as inscriptions of dominant administrative, moral, and scientific ideologies, and (2) as constituting a conceptu…

    Robert E L Roberts, Robert E Roberts et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1996•Cited by: 16

Do relations with parents during the transition from adolescence to adulthood have long-term consequences for self-esteem? We addressed this question with 20-year panel data from 273 youths (age 16-26 at baseline) who participated in the University of Southern California Longitudinal Study of Generations. We found that youths who reported stronger affective ties to parents reported greater self-esteem at baseline and at 17- and 20-year follow-ups…

This article focuses on the operating characteristics of an eight-item loneliness scale developed by the second author. Data from a sample of 2,600 Mexican American and Anglo-American middle school students indicate the scale, the RULS-8, has good reliability and validity. Cronbach's alpha was .87 for Mexican American and .90 for Anglo-American students. Principal components factor analysis yielded one factor accounting for 55.5% of the variance,…

In preparation for a community-based study of depression in adolescence, several pilot studies were conducted with samples of adolescents. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the reliability and association with depression of several instruments when used with older (14- to 18-year-old) adolescents. These instruments included measures of cognitions, body image, self-esteem, self-awareness, social interactions with peers and family, socia…

What are the psychological benefits of close parent-child relations for sons and daughters who have reached adulthood? We apply identity theory to formulate hypotheses concerning potential contributions of parent-child affection to filial self-esteem and well-being in young adulthood. We expect that the immediate psychological benefits of such affection will depend on the psychological salience of the filial identity. Competing «adult» work, mari…

The problems raised focus on the definition of "ethnic group," the failure to control for the effects of age at marriage and employment status of woman in fertility analyses, and the failure to examine current as well as cumulative fertility.
