Constrained multilingualism in a Korean sojourner family’s museum learning
This article examines multilingual family learning within institutional constraints that participants did not choose and cannot fully override. Drawing on an ethnographic case study of a Korean sojourning family in a U.S. science museum, we analyse how multiple chronotopes, including U.S. classroom-shaped reading routines, Korean-medium family interaction, peer-affiliative play, and anticipated Korean school re-entry, organise participation. Fami…

Is Job Loss Always Bad for Health? Evidence from National Health Screening
We examine the effect of job displacement on mortality, hospitalization, biomarkers, and health behaviors in South Korea. We find that the impact on health differs between severe and less severe outcomes and also by gender. Men experience little impact on mortality and hospitalization except for an increase in suicide deaths, whereas their biomarkers and health behaviors improve. Women experience an increase in mortality and hospitalization due t…
Exploring metapragmatics of politeness lexemes using a computational approach
This study employs a computational method, together with qualitative analysis, to explore the metapragmatics of politeness lexemes that both scholars and laypersons fail to provide effective articulations for. We specifically choose two bewildering politeness lexemes – kyemson (‘modesty’) and kongson (‘politeness’) – in Korean, and use the computational approach to identify their metapragmatic differences by analyzing over 27,000 texts that featu…

Does single pregnancy hurt birth outcomes among young mothers
Does single pregnancy adversely affect infant health? This is a challenging research question because there is selection in coresidence during pregnancy. We exploit quasi-natural variation in single pregnancy from the moment of conception to birth, arising from the reform of the marriageable age laws in Korea. The Korean birth certificate data are unique. They provide the information about the coresidence status in addition to the legal marital s…

Despite concerns regarding body image in young Korean women, no measurement tool has yet been developed or is available. This study examined the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the Body-Appreciation Scale (K-BAS) to assess body image positivity among young women. For this purpose, convenience sampling was conducted using social network services. The participants were 245 women (N = 245) aged 20 to 40 years. Validity and reliabil…

Korea’s Foreign Direct Investment in the Automotive Industry in China
This article examines the impact of foreign-invested enterprises in the development of China’s automotive industry. It particularly focuses on the case of foreign direct investment (FDI) by a Korean firm, namely, the Hyundai Motor Company, in China. The Chinese government’s policy regarding the automotive industry allowed China’s domestic manufacturers to benefit from technology transfer, as foreign firms were not allowed to invest exclusively in…

Sex preferences and fertility in South Korea during the year of the Horse
Since antiquity, people in several East Asian countries, such as China, Japan, and South Korea, have believed that a person is destined to possess specific characteristics according to the sign of the zodiac under which he or she was born. South Koreans, in particular, have traditionally considered that the year of the Horse bears inauspicious implications for the birth of daughters. Using monthly longitudinal data at the region level in South Ko…

Does it Matter WHO Responded to the Survey? Trends in the U.S. Gender Earnings Gap Revisited
Studies have shown a decreasing trend in the U.S. gender earnings gap since the 1980s. The authors work with a framework established by Blau and Kahn (1997 JOLE; 2006 ILRR), who used the Michigan Panel of Income Dynamics (PSID) to decompose that gap into observable and unobservable components in order to determine which contributing factors are gender-specific and which can be attributed to the wage structure. They extend the Blau and Kahn framew…

Stressed Out on Four Continents: Time Crunch or Yuppie Kvetch
Social commentators have pointed to problems of workers who face “time stress”—an absence of sufficient time to accomplish all their tasks. An economic theory views time stress as reflecting how tightly the time constraint binds households. Time stress will be more prevalent in households with higher full earnings and whose members work longer in the market or on “required” homework. Evidence from Australia (2001), Germany (2002), the United Stat…

Marriage, the Sharing Rule, and Pocket Money: The Case of South Korea
Using longitudinal data on private consumption from South Korea, this article examines the marital balance of power between spouses in a dynamic setting by allowing for unobserved heterogeneity at the household level and spouses’ time‐constant unobserved bargaining power. I find that unobserved power plays a significant role in intrahousehold resource allocation. The income pooling hypothesis is no longer rejected after accounting for unobserved …
