Feminist Cyberlaw
This vibrant and visionary reimagining of the field of cyberlaw through a feminist lens brings together emerging and established scholars and practitioners to explore how gender, race, sexuality, disability, class, and the intersections of these identities affect cyberspace and the laws that govern it. It promises to build a movement of scholars whose work charts a near future where cyberlaw is informed by feminism
Collaborative art practice as HCI research
This forum highlights conversations at the intersection of design methods and social studies of technology. By highlighting a diversity of perspectives on design interventions and programs, we aim to forge new connections between HCI design and communication, science and technology studies, and media studies scholarship. --- Daniela Rosner, Editor
Sports Heroes and Celebrities
The terms hero and celebrity are increasingly being used interchangeably, but they are fundamentally different. There are some clear distinctions between the two concepts and the challenge is to ascertain how and why they have become conflated. This entry examines the meaning, significance, and types of heroes and why sport remains such an important site for their identification and development. In turn, we need to understand how changes toward a…

Improving Housing Conditions from the Crawl Space up with a Monitoring and Control System
Housing issues constitute a growing research area due to changes of building features and the use of technologically advanced material and devices in homes. Thus, housing-related research needs to be conducted in order to improve the living conditions in houses. This research explored the interactions of temperature and relative humidity in three contiguous housing environments (indoor, outdoor, and crawl spaces) to analyze and evaluate common ho…

Sports Heroes and Celebrities
The terms hero and celebrity have increasingly become used interchangeably, but they are fundamentally different. According to Daniel Boorstin, “ The celebrity is a person who is known for his well‐knownness ... The hero was distinguished by his achievement; the celebrity by his image or trademark. The hero created himself; the celebrity is created by the media. The hero is a big man [ sic ]; the celebrity is a big name” (1992: 57, 61). Thus, the…

Callimachus: Coma Berenices: Origins
In the continuing debate on Callimachus' Coma Berenices (F 110 Pf.) and Catullus' translation of it (c. 66),l) one of the most controversial elements is that of the ritus nuptialis which we find described in Catullus lines 79-88 but which is missing from the Callimachus P. Oxy. 2258. Was the ritus nuptialis an invention of Catullus, or was it in the original Callimachus which Catullus had before him and translated? The thought of Catullus himself…
Resisting the swoosh in the land of the long white cloud
In a recent speech from his Reith lecture series on globalization, Director of the London School of Economics Anthony Giddens recounts the tale of a friend's first encounter with the residents of a tiny, isolated village in central Africa. As the story goes, upon arrival, the anthropologist in question was invited to spend her first night at the home of one of the local villagers. Excited at the prospect of being able to personally experience the…

An Assessment of Empirical Research onDependencia
Dependenciatheory is in vogue among social scientists throughout the world. Having originated in Latin America in the early 1960s, it was widely embraced both there and in parts of Europe and Africa by the end of the decade. In the 1970s, North Americans joined the flood of scholars attempting to grapple with the problems of underdevelopment in the so-called Third World from a perspective explicitly rejecting traditional theories of development. …
Conflict and Coercion in Dependent States
This paper puts forward an action-reaction model of the interaction between civil conflict and state coercion in nations undergoing dependent development. Using graphical techniques and dynamic analysis of difference equations, the conflict-coercion relationship is explored analytically and its implications drawn out. The primary findings are twofold: (1) the intensity with which both state and opposition react to each other is of vital importanc…
