Toward a More Globally Attuned Degrowth
This article contributes to the ongoing efforts to develop a more globally attuned degrowth perspective by placing it in dialogue with post-development scholarship. Together, these two critical frameworks challenge dominant growth-oriented paradigms in distinct geopolitical and epistemological contexts. While degrowth, rooted in the Global North, critiques capitalist expansion and advocates for democratically led downscaling, post-development eme…
Degrowth and (un)sustainable lifestyles in two Danish ecovillages
Based on an extensive qualitative study, this paper explores sustainability in two Danish ecovillages and discusses the findings (meta)theoretically. Linked to the degrowth literature, it takes its point of departure in critical realism by identifying mechanisms related to (un)sustainability in these ecovillages. The most important mechanism generating their sustainable practices is identified as a subsistence political economy, a mechanism roote…
Challenges and AI-driven solutions in maritime search and rescue planning
Maritime Search and Rescue (MSAR) operations face significant challenges due to high uncertainty, dynamic conditions, and resource constraints. Additionally, rigid organizational structures and hierarchical human-centered communication frameworks, fail to adapt to the challenging conditions of maritime environments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into MSAR operations, highlighting how…
Critical realism, the climate crisis and (de)growth
What does it entail to study the climate crisis from – or consistently with – a critical realist perspective? The paper addresses this question in three steps. First, it considers the boundaries of critical realism in relation to climate crisis research. In this context it identifies climate science as a field that in important respects resonates implicitly with critical realism. Conversely, a book by human ecologist Andreas Malm is introduced as…

Underlabouring in Empire
Underlabouring in Empire
Is the work of Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri compatible with critical realism? In this article I argue that their book Empire is not, whereas Multitude is. Critical realists should be interested in this question because the passage from Empire to Multitude can be reconstructed as a case of critical realist underlabouring and, as such, exemplifies an openness to critique and changing political circumstances that critical realists prescribe for t…
From mainstream economics to the boundaries of Marxism
In this paper, we explore Marxism and critical realism by addressing Ben Fine's Addressing the Critical and the Real in Critical Realism. We outline and address Fine's main arguments-that critical realism is insufficiently critical, and that it is insufficiently realistic-before turning to analyse the relation between critical realism and Marxism. Taking Fine's argument as a starting point gives us the opportunity to clearly define the parameters…

No new revolution in economics? Taking Thompson and fine forward
The basic thesis of this paper is that Ben Fine and Grahame Thompson's 1999 exchange on economics imperialism illustrates two positions that talk across each other. Fine's approach to understanding the field of mainstream economics combines methodological analysis of theoretical innovation and a broad critical sociology. Thompson's response to Fine combines methodological analysis of practical and theoretical problems that currently inhibit the m…
Reorienting (critical realism in) economics
Reorienting (Critical Realism In) Economics
Taken together, Tony Lawson’s Economics & Reality1 and Steve Fleetwood’s edited Critical Realism in Economics: Development and Debate 2 played a large part in defining the project critical realism in economics, which also delineates a particular identity within the project of critical realism in general. The defining features of critical realism in economics are a general ontological critique of mainstream economics for its deductive method, form…
