Nudging Taxpayers via Instant Messaging to Submit Their Annual Tax Return: Evidence from a Field Experiment in Indonesia
This paper tests nudges delivered via WhatsApp to encourage timely annual tax returns among 24,887 individual non-employee taxpayers in six tax offices. We compared a standard email to three treatments delivered via a verified WhatsApp business account: (i) a standard message, (ii) a deterrence message, and (iii) a reciprocity message. The pre-registered design permits separating the effects of the mode of delivery (WhatsApp vs. email) and behavi…
Health and Extractive Resources: A Research Note based on Evidence from Indonesian Districts
Most empirical studies on extractive resources examine their effects at the macro level and focus on economic and institutional outcomes. We perform a subnational analysis of the relationship between mineral resource dependence and health measures at the district level in Indonesia, using annual panel data from 2010 to 2020. Fixed-effect models suggest that households in mineral-dependent districts face a higher morbidity risk than households in …
Behavioural and environmental risk factors associated with primary schoolchildren’s overweight and obesity in urban Indonesia
Objectives: To aid the design of nutrition interventions in low- and middle-income countries undergoing a nutrition transition, this study examined behavioural and environmental risk factors associated with childhood overweight and obesity in urban Indonesia. Design: Body height and weight of children were measured to determine BMI-for-age Z-scores and childhood overweight and obesity status. A self-administered parental survey measured socio-eco…
Projecting cardiovascular deaths averted due to trans fat policies in the Eurasian Economic Union
Objective: To demonstrate the potential impact on population health if policies designed to reduce population trans fatty acid (TFA) intake are successfully implemented in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in line with the WHO’s guidelines to lower intake of TFA as a percentage of total energy intake to less than 1 %. Design: A projection exercise was conducted to estimate reductions in CVD-related deaths in countries of the EAEU if TFA policies…
Improving Maternal Health Care in a Post Conflict Setting: Evidence from Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh
We evaluate a development programme with an important maternal health care component in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The region and its mostly indigenous people experienced violent conflict in the past and face a constant risk of recurring conflict. Given this fragile setting, our work differs from conventional impact evaluations by incorporating two conflict indicators: the household’s actual experience of violence and fears of futu…

The impact of the Ethiopian health extension program and health development army on maternal mortality: A synthetic control approach

Corruption and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) has received much attention as a scheme that can help reduce corruption in mineral-rich developing economies. To our knowledge, this paper provides the first empirical attempt (using panel data) to explore how EITI membership links to changes in corruption levels. We also examine whether the different stages in EITI implementation (initial commitment, candidature, full compliance) influence…
Age-Specific Correlates of Child Growth
Growth faltering describes a widespread phenomenon that height- and weight-for-age of children in developing countries collapse rapidly in the first two years of life. We study age-specific correlates of child nutrition using Demographic and Health Surveys from 56 developing countries to shed light on the potential drivers of growth faltering. Applying nonparametric techniques and exploiting within-mother variation, we find that maternal and hous…
Polygyny and Child Growth: Evidence From Twenty-Six African Countries
Using household data from twenty-six African countries, this study examines the correlation between four measures of polygyny and child growth. External validity is added to existing small-sample evidence by investigating this correlation across many countries and by controlling for, as well as exploring, sources of heterogeneity at the regional, country, household, and maternal level. Household fixed-effects models indicate that the children of …
The Impact of Land Mines on Child Health: Evidence from Angola
This article estimates the causal impact of land mines on child health in Angola, controlling for conflict exposure. Our identification strategy is based on the geography of the Angolan civil war. We posit that distance between communes and rebel headquarters is an exogenous driver of land mine contamination. We find that land mine intensity is positively correlated with the distance to a set of rebel headquarters. Instrumental variables estimate…
Child health, its dynamic interaction with nutrition and health memory – Evidence from Senegal
Unterscheidung und Synthese: Rezeptionsformen akustischer Forschung in der Musikliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts
Differentiation and synthesis. Forms of reception of acoustical research in the musical literature of the nineteenth century. In the nineteenth century, both musical scholars and natural scientists discussed the relevance of acoustical research for the theory and practice of music. Whereas some musical theorists and acousticians plead together for an acoustical foundation of musical theory, other scholars questioned the significance of physical a…
