Financial Advice and Household Financial Portfolios
We explore the demand for financial advice and the role of such advice in shaping household financial portfolios. Since taking financial advice may not be randomly allocated among households, understanding the drivers behind receiving financial advice is important before exploring the role of financial advice in shaping the composition of household portfolios. A number of specification tests are undertaken, including exploring the sensitivity of …
Effect of a Management Intervention on Firm Performance and Quality Defects
We use a novel firm-level dataset from a garments manufacturer in Pakistan to investigate the effect of a new quality management monitoring practice on firm performance and daily defects. We provide evidence that the intervention generally had a negative correlation with firm performance for those lines at the extreme ends of the complexity spectrum. Evidence consistent with a quantity-quality trade-off is also found, in that while the implementa…
New Evidence on Disability Benefit Claims in Britain
During the 1980s and 1990s, there was a steep rise in disability benefit claims in Britain, especially among older male workers, and the debate centred on the relative generosity of these benefits as well as the effects of deindustrialization. Since that time, the disability benefit system has been subject to a series of reforms, all largely aimed at reducing the number of claims and targeting benefits more closely to those with the greatest heal…
Inflation convergence in Central and Eastern Europe vs. the Eurozone
In this paper, we consider inflation rate differentials between seven Central and Eastern European Countries ( CEEC s) and the Eurozone. We test for convergence in the inflation rate differentials, incorporating non‐linearities in the autoregressive parameters, fractional integration with endogenous structural changes, and also consider club convergence analysis for the CEEC s over the period 1997 to 2015 based on monthly data. Our empirical find…

Parental Risk Attitudes and Children's Academic Test Scores
Using a sequence of questions from the 1996 US Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), we explore the implications of interpersonal differences in parent's attitudes towards risk for the academic test scores of their children focusing on information drawn from the 1997 Child Development Supplement of the PSID. In addition, we explore whether parental risk preference influences whether the child subsequently attends college. Our findings suggest th…

Are Foreign Firms More Technologically Intensive? Uk Establishment Evidence From the Ard
This paper employs establishment level data from the annual respondents database to consider technological differences between establishments operating in the UK. We adopt very precise measures of technology, arguably much more detailed than have hitherto been employed to address the key question of whether use of technology differs by nationality. After numerous controls we find that typically North American establishments have a higher probabil…
