  • Preferences for consonance are evident in Indigenous Amazonians with higher, but not lower, levels of global integration

    Open Access•Mervyl J Mcpherson, Malinda J McPherson-McNato et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

It is unclear how elementary musical preferences are shaped by experience, in part due to the difficulty of measuring the presumptively relevant aspects of human experience. Previous work with an indigenous small-scale society in the Bolivian Amazon - Tsimane' - has failed to find evidence of the preference for canonically consonant to dissonant music intervals that is widespread in Western listeners. Leveraging changing conditions in the Amazon,…

  • Commonfield Agriculture

Bruce M S Campbell, Bruce Campbell et al.•CHAPTER•Field Systems and Farming Systems…•2023

Commonfield agriculture is one of the most distinctive and intriguing manifestations of common-property resource management. The precise nature of these arrangements depended upon environmental, technological, demographic, and sociopolitical circumstances, which is why England, for example, contained so many different types of commonfield systems. Environmentally, too, there was a vast difference in the circumstances under which these two commonf…

  • Empresarios, minas y campesinos

    Open Access•R Godoy, Ricardo A Godoy•ARTICLE•Allpanchis•2020

The most distinguished anthropological studies on risk have a common characteristic: peasant agriculture. Anthropologists delight in pointing to the "institutional context" (Wolf 1969; XV) and the farming techniques used by peasants to reduce the chances of crop failure and market uncertainties. A partial list of such techniques includes: inter-row planting, plot dispersal, and planting of different species or varieties of the same crop. Social m…

  • Market Engagement and Indigenous People

Jonathan Bauchet, Eduardo A Undurraga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Autarkic indigenous societies are changing fast from increased engagement with markets. Western writers have ascribed a wide array of often contradictory effects to markets, including greater sociability, increased consumption of temptation goods, greater industriousness, and lower adherence to local beliefs. We test the four hypotheses using data from Tsimane', a native Amazonian society in Bolivia. 500 participants aged ≥16y were tracked annual…

  • Child stunting is associated with weaker human capital among native Amazonians

Open Access•Eduardo A Undurraga, Jere R Behrman et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2018

OBJECTIVES: We assessed associations between child stunting, recovery, and faltering with schooling and human capital skills in a native Amazonian society of horticulturalists-foragers (Tsimane'). METHODS: We used cross-sectional data (2008) from 1262 children aged 6 to 16 years in 53 villages to assess contemporaneous associations between three height categories: stunted (height-for-age Z score, HAZ -1), and three categories of human capital: co…

  • Birth seasons and heights among girls and boys below 12 years of age

Open Access•Marek Brabec, Jere R Behrman et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2018

The results suggest that redressing stunting will require attention to conditions in utero, infancy and late childhood

  • Conditional cash transfers for primary education

    Open Access•Jonathan Bauchet, Eduardo A Undurraga et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs to increase primary-school enrollment and attendance among low-income households have been shown to benefit children and households, but to date little is known about who joins such programs. We test three hypotheses about predictors of CCT program participation in indigenous societies in Bolivia, focusing on attributes of the household (ethnicity), parents (modern human capital), and children (age, sex). …

  • Savings at the Periphery of Markets

Eduardo A Undurraga, A Zycherman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2014

We used survey and ethnographic data to study savings in a highly autarkic society of native Amazonians in Bolivia (Tsimane’). We equated savings with the amount of maize and rice in storage, area planted with plantains and manioc, and number of edible domesticated animals owned by a household or an adult. We found no large inter-annual change in savings possibly due to low income, impulsivity and a bundle of institutions and norms, such as borro…

  • Diurnal cortisol rhythms and child growth

Open Access•Colleen Nyberg, Colleen H Nyberg et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2012

OBJECTIVE: Although psychosocial stress has also been implicated as a contributor to growth failure by imposing energetic constraints during development, the direct physiological pathways by which these life history trade-offs are imposed are not well understood. This study explores associations between diurnal cortisol rhythms and differential patterns of linear child growth among the Tsimane, a horticulturalist and foraging society in the Boliv…

  • Sibling composition and children's anthropometric indicators of nutritional status

Open Access•Oyunbileg Magvanjav, Eduardo A Undurraga et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2012

Older brothers and younger sisters were negatively associated with arm measures in girls. This finding may help improve policy interventions that aim to address children's nutritional health and long-term well-being

  • Effects of Government Policies on Smallholder Palm Cultivation

    Elizabeth B Safran, R Godoy et al.•ARTICLE•Human Organization•1993

Rattan is a non-timber forest product with good market potential that has been cultivated sustainably by smallholders for over a century. The government of Indonesia imposed a ban on the export of raw and semi-processed rattan in 1988. To determine whether and how the ban has affected smallholders, we interviewed farmers in two rattan-growing regions in Kalimantan. Since the ban, prices and rural incomes have dropped, cultivation has slowed/stopp…

  • Toward a Cultural Ecology of Mountains

    David Guillet, R Godoy et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1983•Cited by: 14•References: 1

A model of the cultural ecology of tropical high mountains based on a comparison of the Central Andes and the Himalayas is presented. It is argued that mountain adaptations have three basic elements: (1) an array of vertical production zones, each characterized by a complex interaction of variables including agricultural regime, social organization, stratification, land tenure, labor organization, and level of productivity; (2) choice by the popu…

  • Human fertility and land tenure in highland Bolivia

    R Godoy, Ricardo A Godoy•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1984•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Basic demographic data of landless and landed peasants from the highlands and valley of Northern Potosi, Bolivia, are compared. Household size and crude birth rates are larger in the highlands than in the valley. Within the highland population, no statistically significant difference was observed between the age‐specific fertility of landless and landed women, nor in the survivorship ratio of their offspring. The prevalence of exchange and recipr…

  • Small‐scale mining and agriculture among the Jukumani Indians, Northern Potosí, Bolivia

    R Godoy, Ricardo A Godoy•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1988

The causal complexities and rationality of high‐grading are examined in the small‐scale antimony mines of the Jukumani Indians of Northern Potosí, Bolivia. Taxes and piece rate systems of payment provide incentives for selective removal of ore. The contractual format in which piece rate systems of payment are embedded serves the interests of both workers and owners. Proprietors are able to off‐load risks to labourers by paying them by results. Pe…
