  • An inductive model of technological progress

Open Access•John L Enos, John Enos et al.•ARTICLE•Prometheus•2010

The purposes of this paper are threefold: to suggest a conceptual scheme which encompasses innovations and improvements in industry; to express this scheme in the mathematical form of Poisson jump processes; and, finally, to illustrate it with a sequence of cost data drawn from three‐quarters of a century of company operations. In the stochastic process, three parameters summarise the events: (i) random intervals between innovations; (ii) differe…

  • Sporadic Innovation and Historical Continuity

    Open Access•John L Enos•ARTICLE•Prometheus•2003

This article argues that, by appealing to technological factors, one can compare different innovations, even different economies, over time. An application is made to the development of steam engines and turbines over their history from 1700 to 2000, for which it is shown that four types of physical variables--temperatures, pressures, thermal efficiencies and power ratings--provide common measures of succeeding devices. Such measures can be incor…

  • Korean Industrial Policy

    Open Access•John L Enos•ARTICLE•Prometheus•1986

Industrialisation needs to be nourished by means of industrial policy. This paper examines the Korean experience, reporting on the course of industrialisation, the choice of technology, the structure of industry, and the application of controls. The effectiveness of industrial actions in Korea is compared with that in other developing countries. The paper concludes by inferring the principles that have directed the Korean process of industrialisa…

  • Government Intervention in the Transfer of Technology

    Open Access•John L Enos, John Enos•ARTICLE•IDS Bulletin•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The development of South Korea's petrochemical industry has relied heavily on foreign technology. The remarkable success of the industry in a short period of time is mainly due to persistent government intervention at all stages. The efficacy of this intervention is due, in turn, to ‘patriotism’ and ‘the primacy of government’ . This article illustrates a method for assessing the impact of government intervention — by comparing the development of…

    Open Access•John L Enos•ARTICLE•British Journal of Political…•1972•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper presents a theory of the competition of forces and the resolution of conflict over what system of government a country is to adopt. In scope it extends from the prospect of a novel system within a single state to the distribution of this system among all states; in method it considers political events as elements in a single continuous process, the culmination of which provides the resolution of the conflict. The process described in t…
