The Dialectics of Development: USSR Versus China
China's Economic Revolution
Unemployment and Inflation
For the advanced capitalist countries of the world, the 1970s have been nothing to write home about. This decade has seen a retardation of growth, widespread unemployment, sharp and persistent inflation, no end to inequalities, and much social unrest. As if all this were not bad enough, the gods on high have also seen fit to create, during these years, seven new Marxist countries, the specter of Eurocommunism, and a few more menacing national-lib…

Rural development in China 1949–72, and the lessons to be learned from it
China's Economic Strategy
The materialist doctrine that men are the products of circumstances and upbringing, and that therefore changed men are products of other circumstances and changed upbringing, forgets that it is men that change circumstances and that the educator must himself be educated. Hence this doctrine necessarily arrives at dividing society into two parts, of which one is superior to society (in Robert Owen, for example). The coincidence of the changing of …
The Chinese worker: Howe, Wage Patterns and Wage Policy in Modern China, 1919ߝ1972 ; Hoffman, The Chinese Worker
Christopher Howe, who is Head of the Contemporary China Institute at the University of London, states that his book “is an attempt to provide a statistical analysis of changes in the level and structure of Chinese wages from the 1920s to the early 1970s. It also seeks to elucidate both the mechanisms responsible for these changes and their economic significance.” (p. xi)

The Chinese Economy under Communism
Capitalist and Maoist economic development
While capitalist and Maoist processes of economic development have several elements in common, the differences between the two approaches are never theless many and profound. It is certainly not evident that one approach or the other is always superior, in regard either to means or to ends. What is evident, however, is that most studies by American economists of Chinese economic development are based on the assumption of capitalist superiority, a…

The Growth of Debt and Money in the United States, 1800-1950: A Suggested Interpretation
THIS study is concerned with the optimal, or warranted, growth of the monetary system. It constructs a rudimentary model of financial developrlent and deduces optimal trends in the money supply from a demand equation for money balances that is sensitive to both real and financial phenomena of growth. This model, we suggest, is relevant in both retrospect and prospect to the American economy. Against the trends that emerge from the model we array …
