  • Invention complexity, latent innovation capabilities, and economic development in upper middle-income countries

Open Access•Muhammad Salar Khan, Maurice Kugler et al.•ARTICLE•Technological Forecasting and…•2026

This paper examines how upper middle-income countries (UMICs) transition from imitation- to innovation-led growth, and whether sustained innovation capabilities drive long-run economic development. Building on the World Bank's World Development Report 2024 (WDR 2024), we develop a unified theoretical and methodological framework integrating endogenous growth, Schumpeterian growth, economic complexity, and entrepreneurial self-discovery approaches…

  • Long Covid: The evolution of household welfare in developing countries during the pandemic

    Open Access•Ben Brunckhorst, Alexandru Cojocaru et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This study examines household welfare dynamics during the COVID-19 pandemic, using harmonized data from over 300 phone surveys in 80 countries during 2020 and 2021, representing more than 2.5 billion people. The analysis traces out the evolution of employment and income across and within countries as restrictions on economic activity were relaxed. We show some groups initially experiencing higher rates of employment loss - including women, inform…

  • How did the Covid-19 crisis affect different types of workers in the developing world

  • Migration and Cross-Border Financial Flows

Maurice Kugler, Oren Levintal et al.•BOOK•2017

Migration facilitates the flow of information between countries, thereby reducing informational frictions that potentially hamper cross-country financial flows. Using a gravity model, migration is found to be highly correlated with financial flows from the migrant's host country to her home country. The correlation is strongest where information problems are more acute (e.g., between culturally more distant countries), for asset types that are mo…

  • Prices, Plant Size, and Product Quality

Maurice Kugler, Eric Verhoogen•ARTICLE•The Review of Economic Studies•2012

Drawing on uncommonly rich and representative data from the Colombian manufacturing census, this paper documents new empirical relationships between input prices, output prices, and plant size and proposes a model of endogenous input and output quality choices by heterogeneous firms to explain the observed patterns. The key empirical facts are that, on average within narrowly defined sectors, (1) larger plants charge more for their outputs and (2…

  • Factor Adjustments after Deregulation: Panel Evidence from Colombian Plants

Marcela Eslava, John Haltiwanger et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2010

We analyze nonlinear adjustments of capital and labor using plant data from the Colombian Annual Manufacturing Survey, allowing for interdependence in adjustments of the two factors. We find nonlinear employment and capital adjustments. We also find that capital shortages reduce hiring, and labor surpluses reduce capital shedding. Moreover, we find that job destruction and capital formation increased after factor market deregulation in Colombia. …

  • Labor Market Effects of Payroll Taxes in Developing Countries: Evidence from Colombia

Adriana Kugler, Maurice Kugler•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 13

We use a panel of manufacturing plants from Colombia to analyze how the rise in payroll tax rates over the 1980s and 1990s affected the labor market. Our estimates indicate that formal wages fall by between 1.4% and 2.3% as a result of a 10% rise in payroll taxes. This “less‐than‐full shifting” is likely to be the result of weak linkages between benefits and taxes and the presence of downward wage rigidities in Colombia. Because the costs of taxa…

  • Manufacturing Growth and Financial Development: Evidence from OECD Countries

Klaus Neusser, Maurice Kugler•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1998

Recent theoretical models conjecture that the development of the financial sector is essential for economic growth. We investigate this hypothesis from a time-series perspective and find that financial sector GDP is cointegrated for many OECD countries not so much with manufacturing GDP but mostly with manufacturing total factor productivity. Moreover, this relation is in some instances characterized by long-run causality in the sense of Granger …

  • Dinámica de la productividad multisectorial: La Inversión Extranjera Directa Como Canal De Difusión Tecnológica

    Open Access•Maurice Kugler•ARTICLE•Revista Desarrollo y Sociedad•1998
