Women, Wealth and Law: Anglo-Hindu and Anglo-Islamic Inheritance Law in British India
In the late nineteenth century, Anglo-Hindu and Anglo-Islamic inheritance law in British India treated women very differently. Anglo-Hindu inheritance law precluded women from both inheriting a portion of the estate and disposing of their property. Anglo-Islamic inheritance law allowed women to inherit property and did not restrict how they could use this property. Zamindars, inheritance law and the spread of the waqf in the United Provinces at the turn of the twentieth century

Qualitative observations also buttressed discussion of the quantitative variables. The findings of this study show attainment of greater levels of education causes individuals to adopt a more liberal attitude …
Economic Modernization in Late British India: Hindu-Muslim Differences
In South Asia, Muslims made the transition to modern economic life more slowly than Hindus. In the first half of the twentieth century, they were less likely to use large-scale and perpetual commercial organizations and less likely to serve on corporate boards. Providing evidence, this article also explores the institutional roots of the difference in communal trajectories. Whereas Hindu inheritance practices favored capital accumulation within f…
