  • Using Diagnoses to Estimate Health Care Cost Risk in Canada

    Open Access•Yin Li, Sharada Weir et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2019•Referências: 6

OBJECTIVE: Until recently, the options for summarizing Canadian patient complexity were limited to health risk predictive modeling tools developed outside of Canada. This study aims to validate a new model created by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for Canada's health care environment. RESEARCH DESIGN: This was a cohort study. SUBJECTS: The rolling population eligible for coverage under Ontario's Universal Provincial Health I…

  • Beyond Health Plans

    Robin E Clark, Sharada Weir et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2009•Referências: 26

BACKGROUND: Most health insurance plans monitor ambulatory care quality using the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), publicly reporting results at the plan level. Plan-level comparisons obscure the influence of patients served or settings where care is delivered. Mental illness, substance abuse, and other physical comorbidities, particularly prevalent among Medicaid beneficiaries, can impact adherence to recommended care. …

    Tzu-Chun Kuo, Tzu‐Chun Kuo et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2008•Referências: 29

BACKGROUND: No prior studies have used a comprehensive clinical classification system to examine the effect of differences in overall illness burden and the presence of other diseases on costs for patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) when compared with demographically matched nondemented controls. STUDY DESIGN: Of a total of 627,775 enrollees who were eligible for medical and pharmacy benefits for 2003 and 2004 in the MarketScan Medicare Suppleme…

  • Externality Effects of Education

Sharada Weir, John Knight•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2004•Citada por: 1•Referências: 16

This article investigates the role of schooling at the household and community levels in the adoption and diffusion of agricultural innovations in rural Ethiopia. We find that household‐level education is important to the timing of adoption but less crucial to the question of whether a household has ever adopted fertilizer (since those without schooling may eventually copy the educated). Community‐level education substitutes for low levels of hou…

  • The role of education in facilitating risk-taking and innovation in agriculture

John Knight, Sharada Weir et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2003

The impact of education on farmers' attitudes toward endogenous risk (measured using an attitude survey instrument) is estimated with household data from rural Ethiopia. Education of the household head is found to decrease risk-aversion. Next, the effects of education and risk attitudes on technology adoption are estimated. Schooling encourages farmers to adopt innovations, whereas risk-aversion reduces the probability of adoption. Thus, we find …
