The effect of export market access on labor market power
On terms of trade, offshoring ties, and the enforcement of trade agreements
Import competition, labor market regulations, and firm outsourcing
International trade and employment
We extend the small country trade model with firm heterogeneity (Demidova and Rodriguez‐Clare, Journal of International Economics, 90, 2013 and 266) to incorporate offshoring (along with final goods trade). We derive the firm‐level employment implications of output and input trade and trade costs and test them using Korean firm‐level data for the period 2006–2016. A key theoretical result is that the impact of a change in offshoring cost on emplo…
Electoral competition in the presence of identity politics
This paper studies the effects of cultural identity on electoral and policy outcomes when voters are “behavioral.” Building on the evidence that voters assess political or economic events through the lens of their partisan identifications, we analyze an election between two office-motivated candidates in which voters over-reward or under-punish the candidate that shares their cultural identity. Focusing on issues with cultural as well as distribu…

Inequality and the Instability of Polity and Policy
We create alternative measures of political instability, which capture only movements from dictatorship to democracy and vice versa and, unlike older, well-known measures, does not capture government changes that preserve the democratic or dictatorial structure of the country. We show that inequality is positively correlated with our measures of political instability as well as with a well-known measure (used by Alesina and Perotti) but the impac…
Trade Reforms, Labor Regulations, and Labor-Demand Elasticities
Using industry-level data disaggregated by states, this paper finds a positive impact of trade liberalization on (the absolute values of) labor demand elasticities in the Indian manufacturing sector. The magnitudes of these elasticities turn out to be negatively related to protection levels that vary across industries and over time. Furthermore, we find that these elasticities are not only larger in size for Indian states with more flexible labor…
Temporary shocks and offshoring
Reciprocated unilateralism in trade reforms with majority voting
Political Ideology and Endogenous Trade Policy
In this paper, we investigate empirically how government ideology affects trade policy. The prediction of a partisan, ideology-based model (within a two-sector, two-factor Heckscher-Ohlin framework) is that left-wing governments will adopt more protectionist trade policies in capital-rich countries, but adopt more pro-trade policies in labor-rich countries, than right-wing ones. The data strongly support this prediction in a very robust fashion. …
Interest Groups and Trade Policy
For more than two centuries now, economists have advocated free trade. Yet, trade policy almost always and everywhere has involved some amount of import protection. Among the political‐economy theories studying the reasons behind the existence of protection, the Grossman and Helpman (1994) ‘Protection for Sale’ model is the first to provide detailed microfoundations to the behaviour of lobbies and politicians. Within a multisectoral framework in …
“Protection for Sale” in a Developing Country
For a “genuine” small open economy that has experienced both dictatorship and democracy, we find support for the predictions of the Grossman-Helpman (1994) “Protection for Sale” model. In contrast to previous studies, we use various protection measures (including tariffs, the direct measure of the theoretical model) and perform both single-year and panel regressions. Using Turkish industry-level data, the government's weight on welfare is estimat…
