  • Social network analysis from the perspective of African political philosophy

    Open Access•Dominic Burbidge•ARTICLE•Review of Social Economy•2026•References: 68

Social network analysis tracks the reach of human networks to understand how interpersonal interactions and relationships influence behavioural outcomes. There is great scope for research on sub-Saharan African elite politics through social network analysis, but one must also avoid an ‘off the shelf’ solution. The article engages African political philosophy to reconstruct the methodology, requiring that two assumptions be jettisoned: (1) the ass…

  • When Money Can't Buy Political Love: Lab Experiments on Vote Buying in Ghana and Uganda

Dominic Burbidge, Nic Cheeseman et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2025•References: 32

Citizens who reject bribery in the context of democratic political processes might view the exchange of money for votes as illegitimate, even if they enjoy reciprocal relationships with politicians in other contexts. We test this by using lab-in-the-field experiments in Ghana and Uganda. Participants play the roles of voters and of candidates who have opportunities to bribe. Voters are more likely to vote for a candidate who had the opportunity t…

  • Central: Self-sufficiency through local government

Dominic Burbidge, Thomas Raji et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Kenyan Politics•2020

The chapter discusses how devolution has played out in the former Central Province of Kenya, comprising the counties of Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyandarua, and Nyeri. Devolution was a controversial provision of the Kenyan Constitution, and many in central Kenya believed during its early stages that its costs outweighed its benefits. Further, because most voters backed Uhuru Kenyatta for the presidency, there was not the same desire for local …

  • Transition to subnational democracy: Kenya’s 2017 presidential and gubernatorial elections

    Dominic Burbidge•ARTICLE•Regional & Federal Studies•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Perceptions of the legitimacy of the 2017 subnational elections in Kenya have been bound-up with perceptions of the presidential race, which was nullified by the Supreme Court, casting doubt on the results of subnational elections held on the same day. I conduct a nationally representative survey on the way citizens voted on election day, akin to an exit-poll of Kenya's 2017 elections, and find that the survey responses match with the electoral c…

  • Trust, Ethnicity and Integrity in East Africa: Experimental Evidence from Kenya and Tanzania

Open Access•Dominic Burbidge, Nic Cheeseman•ARTICLE•The Journal of Race Ethnicity and…•2017

Political economy comparisons of Kenya and Tanzania have often found the political salience of ethnicity to be far higher in the former than the latter, with a negative impact on intercommunal trust. This difference has tended to be explained on the basis of the different kinds of leadership that the two countries experienced after independence. However, these findings have typically been demonstrated using aggregate or survey data. This paper as…

  • Africa: Why economists get it wrong

    Dominic Burbidge•ARTICLE•African Affairs•2016

In this stimulating book, Morten Jerven questions the historical focus of development economics as applied to Africa and calls for greater emphasis on the individual experiences of African countries, rather than using case studies as fodder for statistical analysis. The book builds seamlessly from earlier reflections in Poor numbers: How we are misled by African development statistics and what to do about it (Ithaca NY: Cornell University Press, …

  • Can someone get me outta this middle class zone?!' Pressures on middle class Kikuyu in Kenya's 2013 election

    Open Access•Dominic Burbidge•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2014•Cited by: 10•References: 3

Whilst the middle class are often heralded as forerunners for consolidating democracy, the experiences of Kikuyu in Kenya's 2013 election reveal how under-problematised the socio-economic group is for understanding the pressures faced in voting. The article presents evidence from diary entries of young middle class Kikuyu residing in Nairobi who recorded their feelings and impressions across a period of one month surrounding the country's electio…

  • Urban trust in Kenya and Tanzania: Cooperation in the provision of public goods

    Dominic Burbidge•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of African…•2013•References: 32

Literature connecting ethnic diversity with public goods provision has found public goods to be poorly and unevenly supplied in ethnically heterogeneous communities. Scrutinising this hypothesis, the study contrasts an ethnically homogenous community in Kenya with an ethnically heterogeneous one in Tanzania, documenting levels of trust and cooperation in public goods provision. Interviews and focus groups with market-sellers of Mwanza (Tanzania) …
