  • Elevated peripheral glutamate and upregulated expression of NMDA receptor NR1 subunit in insomnia disorder

Open Access•Jingjing Lin, Xiaohui Hou et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Glutamatergic neurotransmission was abnormal in ID patients. Additionally, the mRNA expression levels of the NMDAR NR1 subunit appeared to have potential as a clinical biomarker for ID. However, the sample size of our study was limited, and future studies with larger sample sizes are needed to further validate and explore the mechanisms involved and to assess the reliability of the biomarker

  • Reduced left dorsolateral prefrontal activation in problematic smartphone users during the Stroop task

Open Access•Ming-Qiang Xiang, Long Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

These results provide first behavioral and neuroscientific evidence using event-related fNIRS method, to our knowledge, that college students with PSPU may have a deficit in inhibitory control associated with lower cortical activation in the left-DLPFC

  • Lifestyle behaviors and stress are risk factors for overweight and obesity in healthcare workers

Open Access•Xinyue Guo, Shaoqing Gong et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The overweight/obesity rate of Chinese HCWs is rather high, which might be directly associated with lifestyle behaviors. However, these behaviors fundamentally originated from persistent stress and/or recurrent anxiety/depression, mediated by lifestyle behaviors. Substantial measures should be taken for stress reduction and mental health promotion for overweight/obesity prevention and control among HCWs

  • A socio-ecological approach to inclusive physical education in China

Open Access•Xiao Liang, Minghui Li et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

  • Can higher spending on primary healthcare mitigate the impact of ageing and non-communicable diseases on health expenditure

Open Access•Xiaohui Hou, Lingrui Liu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2022

INTRODUCTION: Financing healthcare for ageing populations has become an increasingly urgent policy concern. Primary healthcare (PHC) has been viewed as the cornerstone of health systems. While most research has examined the effects of PHC on population health, there is still a relative paucity of analysis on the effects of PHC on health expenditures, particularly, in low-income and middle-income countries. Knowledge on PHC's potential role in mit…

  • The Heterogeneous Effects of a Food Price Crisis on Child School Enrolment and Labour

Xiaohui Hou, Seo Yeon Hong et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2016

Using a panel survey, this paper investigates how food price increases in Pakistan in 2008–2010 affect children’s school enrolment and labour. The causal identification relies on the geographical variations in food (wheat) price. The results show that the negative impacts of food price increase on school enrolment differ by gender, economic status and the presence of siblings. The negative effects on school do not directly correspond to the incre…

  • Determinants of Tobacco Consumption in P apua N ew G uinea

Open Access•Xiaohui Hou, Xiaochen Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies•2015

This article analyses smoking prevalence and smoking behaviours in P apua N ew G uinea ( PNG ). Using the 2009–2010 PNG Household Income and Expenditure Survey, the article analyses the determinants of tobacco use and tobacco choices in PNG . The results show adults (18 years and above) in the poorest quartile are more likely to smoke. Tobacco consumption imposes a large financial burden to poor households. Tobacco consumption accounts for about …

  • The effect of women's decision-making power on maternal health services uptake

    Open Access•Xiaohui Hou, Ning Ma•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 27

A large body of research has explored the links between women's decision making and their uptake of maternal health services, but the evidence so far is inconclusive. This study uses the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey to examine the influence of household decision making on women's uptake of maternal health services. We find that women's decision-making power has a significant positive correlation with maternal health ser…

  • Wealth

Xiaohui Hou•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2010

This study uses cross-sectional time-series data to examine the relationship between wealth and child labour and schooling in Pakistan and finds that wealth is crucial in determining a child's activities, but is far from being a sufficient condition to enrol a child in school. This is particularly the case for rural girls. Nonparametric analysis shows a universal increase in school enrolment for rural girls from 1998–2006 and this increase is ind…

  • Can Drought Increase Total Calorie Availability? The Impact of Drought on Food Consumption and the Mitigating Effects of a Conditional Cash Transfer Program

    Xiaohui Hou•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 29

This study uses the panel data of a randomized experiment from the Mexican PROGRESA program to evaluate the impact of drought on total calorie availability and the mitigating effects of PROGRESA on food consumption in periods of drought. Drought reduced total expenditures and total food expenditures but increased the total availability of calories. This paradox can be explained by the impact of drought on the composition of calories; that is, it …
