  • Disintegrated development at the rural–urban fringe: Re-connecting spatial planning theory and practice

Open Access•A J Scott, Alister Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Planning•2013

The spaces where countryside meets town are often amongst society's most valued and pressured places which together form the rural–urban fringe (RUF). A ‘messy’ yet opportunistic space in policy and decision making processes, the RUF remains confused and ‘disintegrated’ lacking sufficient understanding and explicit attention for sustainable management as places in their own right. This paper exposes the scope, nature and reasons leading towards p…

  • Evaluation of the obstetric significance of some pelvic characters in an 18th century british sample of known parity status

Open Access•Margaret Cox, Andrew Scott et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 14•References: 12

The excavations at Christ Church, Spitalfields (1984–86) produced a sample of 968 human skeletons which were interred between 1729 and 1859. Of these, 387 were recovered in association with coffin plates stating name, age at death, and date of death. There are 138 adult females in the named sample and the obstetric histories of 94 have been reconstructed from historical documentation. Such variables as birth spacing, number of children, and age a…

  • Constrained and unconstrained fetal growth: Associations with some biological and pathological factors

Open Access•Margaret Ounsted, A Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1988

Data are presented on the birthweights of 1092 siblings and 5207 maternal and paternal relatives of 986 probands. Previous analyses had demonstrated the potency of a maternal regulator constraining fetal growth. Different patterns of birthweights were found in families ascertained, respectively, through very large and very small babies (Ounsted, Scott and Ounsted 1986). When the data were reanalyzed in respect of other biological and pathological…

  • Transmission through the female line of a mechanism constraining human fetal growth

Open Access•Margaret Ounsted, A Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1986

Cross-breeding experiments between large and small strains of mammals have shown the powerful influence of the maternal organism on the control of fetal growth. The prepotency of a maternal regulator has also been demonstrated in humans. Our earlier studies indicated that this regulator acts by means of constraint; there is no equivalent accelerating mechanism. Data on 1092 siblings and 5207 paternal and maternal relatives of 986 probands show di…

  • On Chi-Squared Tests for Multiway Contingency Tables with Cell Proportions Estimated from Survey Data

    J N K Rao, A J Scott•ARTICLE•The Annals of Statistics•1984

The impact of survey design on standard multinomial-based methods for a multiway contingency table is studied, under nested loglinear models. The asymptotic null distribution of the Pearson chi-squared test statistic, $X^2$ (or the likelihood ratio test statistic, $G^2$) is obtained as a weighted sum of independent $\chi^2_1$ random variables, and the weights are then related to the familiar design effects (deffs) used by survey samplers. A simpl…

  • The Analysis of Categorical Data from Complex Sample Surveys: Chi-Squared Tests for Goodness of Fit and Independence in Two-Way Tables

    J N K Rao, A J Scott•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1981

The effect of stratification and clustering on the asymptotic distributions of standard Pearson chi-squared test statistics for goodness of fit (simple hypothesis) and independence in a two-way contingency table, denoted as X 2 and XI 2, respectively, is investigated. It is shown that both X 2 and XI 2 are asymptotically distributed as weighted sums of independent χ1 2 random variables. The weights are then related to the familiar design effects …
