Intransitivity, the Spatial Interaction Model, and US Migration Streams
The flows predicted by a large class of spatial interaction models are transitive, yet US migration tables have been shown to contain large numbers of intransitivities. This paper investigates a number of possible conditions under which flows regulated by the spatial interaction model might be observed to be intransitive. A singly constrained gravity model is calibrated for a number of flow tables, and distorted by sampling error, by aggregation …
Models of Hierarchically Dominated Spatial Interactiona
Strongly asymmetrical spatial flows are analyzed by using as example the flows of news between major Canadian cities. Conceptually such flows can be modelled by combining a vertical dimension of dominance with two spatial dimensions. The conceptual model is interpreted mathematically by appropriate use of the attraction and emissivity terms in the spatial interaction model. A family of models is identified and calibrated using the Canadian data, …
Some Least-Cost Models of Spatial Administrative Systems in Southern Ontario
The paper reformulates the classical Transportation problem to define administrative areas in Southern Ontario. With given centres and stated constraints on the population to be served by each centre, boundaries have been delimited. The authors then develop an iterative method for relocating the centres which reduces the overall cost of the regionalisation system. Three indices for each system have been devised. The regionalisation scheme of the …
