  • Adaptive versus non‐adaptive phenotypic plasticity and the potential for contemporary adaptation in new environments

    Open Access•Cameron K Ghalambor, John Mckay et al.•ARTICLE•Functional Ecology•2007

The role of phenotypic plasticity in evolution has historically been a contentious issue because of debate over whether plasticity shields genotypes from selection or generates novel opportunities for selection to act. Because plasticity encompasses diverse adaptive and non‐adaptive responses to environmental variation, no single conceptual framework adequately predicts the diverse roles of plasticity in evolutionary change. Different types of ph…

    John P Mckay, John Mckay•ARTICLE•Southeast Asian affairs•2002

It is now more than a decade since the first meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum was held in Canberra, in 1989. Since then, opinions about APEC, its achievements, and future role have ranged from the wildly optimistic to the utterly dismissive. Yet APEC survives, and the relative success of the recent APEC Leaders' Meeting in Shanghai demonstrates that the organization can still play a very useful role in regional affai…

  • Some Generative Rules for German Time Adverbials

    John Mckay, John C McKay•ARTICLE•Language•1968

The paper is concerned only with those time adverbials that are not part of the Verb Phrase (free time adverbials). Taking the rule Adv → Prep NP as part of the base, it is shown how different types of adverbials can be distinguished either by the syntactic features of the lexical items dominated by Adv or by configuration. Each #S# of the deep structure is allowed at most one free adverbial. Surface sentences with more than one free adverbial ar…
