  • Does traffic congestion influence the location of new business establishments? An analysis of the San Francisco Bay Area

    Open Access•Taner Osman, Trevor M Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Chronic traffic congestion is widely assumed to negatively affect regional economic performance, but this assumption has been only lightly tested. We examine the traffic congestion–economic performance link using data for the San Francisco Bay Area and find that the effect of traffic on the regional economy may be both less significant and more nuanced than is widely assumed. Our analysis examines how traffic congestion affects the location of ne…

  • World Energy Resources: Survey and Review

    Open Access•Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1973

T HE population explosion, particularly in the underdeveloped, or Third World, countries, is now almost certainly destined to double the world's inhabitants to 7 billion by the year 2000. In the face of this one has no real justification for treating lightly the views of the prophets of doom who foresee a rapid depletion of the planet's nonrenewable resources and an approaching global energy crisis. Population control and more positive management…

  • Solution Subsidence Mechanisms and End-Products in South-East Breconshire

    Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1973•Cited by: 1

Low-dipping Carboniferous Limestone and Basal Grit (Millstone Grit) provide the structural framework for stepped scarp faces and intervening elevated dip-slopes on this segment of the North Crop of the South Wales coalfield. Fully half the extent of the limestone country is veneered with the jumbled and highly-broken remnants of a former grit cover. This has been largely derived through solution-subsidence agencies, but has been appreciably modif…

  • Gash-Breccias of South Pembrokeshire: Fossil Karstic Phenomena

    Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1971•References: 1

The paper records the results of mapping on a scale of I: 2500 of the gash-breccia pockets occurring within the Carboniferous Limestone Series of the Pembroke peninsula. Hypotheses for the 'derivation of these deposits through the medium of major cavern collapse or as former 'open-sky' scree accumulations are discussed. It is concluded, however, that the gash-breccias were tectonically produced in the first instance with preferential solution and…

  • The North Sea and Its Environs: Future Reservoir of Fuel

    Open Access•Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•1966•Cited by: 3

IN 1964 it was estimated that the output of crude oil in the non-Communist world was approaching 25 million barrels a day but would need to be supplemented by 20 million barrels a day by 1975 to keep abreast of the virtual doubling of demand that now appears to be taking place in every decade.' This increase can be met by the adoption of new techniques to raise the present recoverable rates of 20 to 40 percent from proved oilfields to 50 or 60 pe…

  • Recent Trends and Developments in the British Coal Mining Industry

    Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1958

T nHE coal industry is by far the major source of primary fuel in Britain. To administer this industry, a public corporation, the National Coal Board, responsible through Parliament to the people, was set up on January 1, 1947. The Board thus became the greatest single employer of labor in the country, directing a labor force of nearly 800,000 workers. Opencast mining, originally the responsibility of the Ministry of Fuel and Power, was taken ove…

  • Swallow Holes on the Millstone Grit and Carboniferous Limestone of the South Wales Coalfield

    Trevor M Thomas•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1954•Cited by: 1

SWALLOW holes or depressions caused by the collapse of underlying caverns are characteristic f ar as underlain by calcareous beds. The junctions of essentially calcareous formations and overlying systems of sharply contrasting lithological character have frequently been described as showing a profusion, or concentrated alignment, of swallow holes or allied forms.1 These generally mark the disappearance points of surface streams into underground c…
