  • The Development of South Asian Settlement in Britain and the Myth of Return

    Vaughan Robinson•CHAPTER•Ethnic Segregation in Cities•2023

The Ballards have proposed a four-stage development cycle for South Asian settlement in Britain. The movement of South Asian groups through such a cycle may be thought to demonstrate increasing permanence, steady erosion of cultural values, and a rejection of the economic reasoning behind the initial migration. This chapter builds upon the early foundations of the Ballards’ work by extending their chronology to take in both an explicit considerat…

  • Bridging the Gulf

    Vaughan Robinson•CHAPTER•Return Migration and Regional…•2015

This chapter concerns recent labour migration from Bangladesh, India and Pakistan to the six Arab states which together make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates). It focusses on the economic significance of this movement for the sending societies, and the relative balance of advantages and disadvantages which accrues to those societies through emigration, expatriate remittances,…

  • Exploring Contemporary Migration

Exploring Contemporary Migration provides the first comprehensive introduction to the various aspects of population migration in both the developed and the developing worlds. Some of the most important quantitative and qualitative methods used for the description and analysis of migration are presented in a clearly structured and accessible way. The various theoretical approaches used to explain the complex patterns of migration are also summaris…

  • Ethnicity, Social Mobility, and Public Policy

Open Access•Mary J Hickman, Nathan Glazer et al.•BOOK•Ethnicity, Social Mobility, and…•2005

This major comparative study of the social mobility of ethnic minorities in the US and UK argues that social mobility must be understood as a complex and multi-dimensional phenomenon, incorporating the wealth and income of groups, but also their political power and social recognition. Written by leading sociologists, economists, political scientists, geographers, and philosophers in both countries, the volume addresses issues as diverse as educat…

  • Spreading the 'Burden'

Open Access•Vaughan Robinson, Roger Andersson et al.•BOOK•Spreading the 'burden'?•2003

European governments are now engaging in one of the largest exercises in social engineering that the continent has seen since the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers and refugees in Europe are now being denied their basic right to choose where they live and are instead being compulsorily dispersed. Spreading the 'burden' is: · the first book-length study of dispersal policies; · explicitly comparative in nature and written b…

  • Lessons Learned? A Critical Review of the Government Program to Resettle Bosnian Quota Refugees in the United Kingdom

    Open Access•Vaughan Robinson, Caroline Coleman•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2000

This study critically evaluates the government program put in place to manage the reception and resettlement of Bosnian quota refugees who arrived in the United Kingdom between November 1992 and August 1995. It outlines the organizational structure put in place to administer the program, the objectives of the program, and the scale of funding allocated to it. It describes how the program was then implemented and critically appraises the outcomes.…

  • Peopling Skilled International Migration

    Open Access•Vaughan Robinson, Malcolm Carey•ARTICLE•International Migration•2000•Cited by: 30•References: 2

This article uses a case‐study approach in relation to the migration of Indian doctors to the UK in order to illustrate the complexity and multi‐levelled nature of explanations for international migration. It argues that whereas, at the level of discursive consciousness, the movement of Indian doctors to the UK appears an economically driven and shapedphenomenon akin to other examples of highly skilled international migration, when the practical …

Open Access•Keith Sword, Valli Kanapathipillai et al.•CHAPTER•Cambridge Survey of World Migration•1995

The reason why the notion of a ‘repatriate’ seems distant to native English-speakers is that the relevant experience has been unusual in British and American history. However, repatriation has occasioned deep political traumas in other countries. Let me provide some examples. In 1960, the Belgians scrambled out of the Congo amidst scenes of chaos and destruction. Tearful nuns and frightened settlers fled on hastily improvised flights back to Brus…

Il commence par s'interroger à propos de la raison pour laquelle ce groupe a fait l'objet de si peu de recherches puis il analyse certaines constantes culturelles qui apparaissent chez les Chinois d'outre-mer. • Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

    Vaughan Robinson•ARTICLE•New Community•1991•References: 6

There is a relative paucity of work on the migration of Britain's black and Asian population within the UK. This is partly caused by the scarcity of reliable national data brought about, for example, by the government's failure to include ethnic origin within the National Health Service Central Register database. This article uses an alternative source — Office of Population Censuses and Surveys Longitudinal Study — to chart the broad outlines of…

  • Roots to mobility

    Vaughan Robinson•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1990•Cited by: 12•References: 5

The social mobility of Britain's Afro-Caribbean and Asian populations is an under-researched topic. Extant studies are briefly described before new data are presented from two sources which have been little used in this context. The Labour Force Survey and Longitudinal Study allow an outline description of aggregate and individual social mobility during the 1970s and 1980s. These data suggest that, although members of certain ethnic groups are ga…

    Open Access•Vaughan Robinson•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1980•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Current theories explaining Asian non-participation in council housing are described and criticised. An analysis of the situation in the northern industrial city of Blackburn, Lancashire, serves to highlight the increasing inadequacies of these theories. Evidence presented here suggests that, for a number of reasons, Asians are now applying for, and being granted, council houses in significantly larger numbers. The reasons for this are discussed …
