A Revisit to Recast Efficacy in L2 Learning
This study examined recast efficacy in L2 learning from the perspective of alignment. As the hallmark of interaction, alignment facilitates L2 learning when models of linguistic structures proceed and prime subsequent output. This input‐before‐output sequence runs counter to the output‐before‐input array associated with the way of delivering recasts which may induce weaker alignment effects and hence limited recast efficacy. To verify this reason…
Effect of Alignment on L2 Written Production
This article aims to uncover how L2 writing is affected by alignment, a socio-cognitive process involving dynamic coordination and adaptation. For this, two studies were conducted. Study 1 required two groups of 24 learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) to continue in English two stories with their endings removed, both of which had a Chinese version and an English version. Each group continued one story following the reading of its Chin…
L2 Acquisition of Conflation Classes of Prenominal Adjectival Participles
This article reports on an investigation into how Chinese-speaking second language (L2) learners of English develop L2 knowledge of conflation classes of verbs in the formation of prenominal adjectival participles. Four groups of 40 learners and 1 group of 30 native speakers of English participated in the study. They were asked to judge the acceptability of the prenominal adjectival participles placed in 4 different linguistic contexts. The resul…
